    Judoka from Ciego de Ávila will participate in Grand Slam in Paris

    Jorge Martínez Wilson (-81 kilograms), the judoka from Ciego de Avila with the most laurels in national and international events, will participate in the Grand Slam in Paris, scheduled to be held on February 4 and 5, and with which the season begins that sport at the level of elite tournaments in the world.

    “I feel good and I am not giving up a good result, although this is my first strong event in the last four years, since I only competed last November in a tournament in Panama, where I qualified for the next Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador," he said via WhatsApp.

    Cuba will participate in the fight with 10 competitors (five in each sex) and aspires to a good performance, based on the preparation received in the last phase of the past, with training in several European countries and, later, with a demanding preparation in the Island, including the national gala held at the end of December.

    The team is made up of Orlando Polanco (-66 kg), Magdiel Estrada (-3 kg), Jorge Martínez (-81 kg), Iván Felipe Silva (-90 kg) and Liéster Cardona (-100 kg).

    Vanesa Godínez (-48 kg), Melisa Hurtado (-52 kg), Arnaes Odelín (-57 kg), Maylín del Toro (-63) and Idelannis Gómez (-70 kg) will be among the women.

    According to the page of the International Judo Federation, 467 competitors from 68 countries, from the five continents, will participate in the Parisian competition.

    281 men and 186 women will try to find the podium, considered a high number in both sexes for this type of start to the season in the sport that the Japanese Jigoro Cano invented.
