The possibilities of applying artificial intelligence (AI) in prioritized sectors were evaluated during an exchange of the affiliate of the Cuban Academy of Sciences (ACC) in the Camagüey‒Ciego de Ávila region with representatives of various organizations and researchers from the latter province.
Doctor of Science Yailé Caballero Mota, president of that academic institution, expressed that the Cuban scientific community linked to the development of AI is positioned internationally and shows a high commitment to the economic and social development strategy in the country.
She exemplified that during the health crisis caused by the SARS‒CoV‒2 virus, which caused the COVID‒19 pandemic, the use of this science made it possible to establish trends on the behavior of this disease, in a way that favored decision-making aimed at to control and confrontation.
She highlighted the benefits of using AI in various health specialties and in spheres such as transportation, energy, education, security and entertainment, although it is applicable to all areas of knowledge, based on its usefulness for solving high- complexity problems.
She emphasized that due to its predictive analysis capabilities, it constitutes an important source of increased productivity and efficiency, thus creating competitive advantages and stimulating the growth of companies and the economy.
It facilitates advances in all industries at an international level, with positive results in the production of goods and services and better opportunities for customer satisfaction and improved finances.
She referred to the potential of AI to catalyze economic recovery and achieve the desired productive growth, based on the experiences of countries such as China, Spain, Belgium, Estonia, Chile, Uruguay and Peru.
In the business sector —she explained— it is used to recommend products and services, automate messaging services, recognize voices and images, segment audiences, carry out commercial operations, develop and study digital campaigns, customize products and searches, and create content.
Consequently, she announced, Cuba is currently working on the design of a strategy for the development of this science, based on the interest of the country's highest leadership and with the purpose of taking advantage of capacities to materialize progress in key areas.
Elme Carballo Ramos, a researcher at the Máximo Gómez Báez University, in Ciego de Ávila, considered that AI is transversal to progress; therefore, he suggested its implementation in tourism and agriculture, with the aim of increasing the quality of services and the food production, respectively.
He stated that in the current context, when it comes to governance with more science, it is imperative to move towards these technologies to specify territorial development strategies.
Rafael Pérez Carmenate, territorial delegate of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, valued the possible contributions to the Food Sovereignty and Nutrition Education Program.
Viviano Moyano Trujillo, director of the Territorial Control Office of the Ministry of Communications, agreed that digital transformation is not possible without AI and underlined the multiple benefits to promote the computerization of Cuban society.
Likewise, they evaluated the introduction of this science in education and transportation, programs and projects aimed at confronting climate change and plant biotechnology.
The ACC affiliate in the Camagüey‒Ciego de Ávila region commemorated its third anniversary on February 3, an opportunity to recognize the merits and contributions of four associated scientists, all belonging to the Ciego de Ávila`s house of higher studies.
