A series of measures are adopted or their upcoming implementation in Ciego de Ávila in favor of the rational use of water is valued, in the midst of an immediate context in which the rains have had a greater presence, but saving vital water should not be neglected.

Adoptan acciones para el uso racional del agua en Ciego de Ávila

Among the actions adopted to avoid aggravating the decline of aquifers in an unfavorable state is the readjustment to 80 percent of the water balance of the entities that are located in those areas of greatest danger, but due to the lack of resources for the preparation of the land, the demand for the liquid is below half, say specialists from the Provincial Delegation of Hydraulic Resources.

The mitigation or elimination of discharges from cisterns in multi-family buildings in the provincial capital is another issue to be amended. It would then be a matter of providing a comprehensive solution from supply and sanitation, even if it is not provided for in the plans.

On the subject, Hiorvanys Espinosa Pérez, coordinator of programs and objectives of the provincial government in Ciego de Ávila, said that the sources of financing must be defined to undertake these tasks, among which may be the territorial contribution for local development (also known as the one percent).

The Housing and Aqueduct and Sewer companies will be in charge of executing, as a whole, the program that is intended to be as comprehensive as possible. "We will work by priorities from where the greatest difficulties appear, not everything will be solved at once, but a part will be solved," Espinosa Pérez alleged.

A not insignificant part, taking into account the thousands of liters of water that are wasted daily in cisterns such as those in the nine-story buildings of the Vista Alegre neighborhood, for example, which then do not reach other customers. Pumping represents expenses for electricity and chemical products.

In the inspection it was detected that not all these community water reservoirs have valves or buoys to prevent their overflow; however, more subjective issues also have an impact, such as whether it is not closed once full.

Putting into operation or testing the South-North hydraulic link of the aqueduct of the city of Ciego de Ávila is another of the actions to be followed to alleviate the supply deficit of the sources, in the event of this situation.

In the same way, but more in the medium term, the disconnection of the conductor is intended, from Ruspoli to the north of the city of Ciego de Avila, from the towns located on that route. This action will be implemented once the change of energy matrix is made from photovoltaic or hybrid solar pumping for the small sources that supply them.
