The Forecast Group of the Provincial Meteorological Center reported on its institutional social networks that this June 1; the hurricane season begins in the tropical North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.

The note specifies that tropical cyclones can form on any day of the year, but they are more frequent between the June 1st. and November 30. In this period, 97 percent of tropical cyclones are formed, the rest are formed, mainly, in May and December.

As it has been published, the most dangerous months for Ciego de Ávila, in which this type of meteorological organisms have affected us most frequently, are August, September and October.

Tropical cyclones in July in Ciego de Ávila?

July is the second month of the hurricane season with the lowest incidence for Ciego de Ávila, behind June and before November.

In the Atlantic basin, 14 named cyclones (tropical storms and hurricanes), 7 hurricanes and 3 intense hurricanes (with sustained winds greater than 178 km/h) form, as a climatological average in one season.

The Cuban Institute of Meteorology has forecast that the 2023 hurricane season will be normal to not very active, with the formation of 11 named cyclones and 5 hurricanes. The probability of a hurricane hitting Cuba is moderate, and was estimated at 36 percent. Other foreign meteorological institutions have made a similar forecast for Cuba.

How many tropical cyclones have affected Ciego de Ávila in November?

November is the third month of the hurricane season with the least incidence for the province, only preceded by June and July.

Such forecasts are of significant scientific interest, because they relate the conditions of the atmosphere and the ocean to the number of cyclones that will form, but they do not forecast the tracks of the cyclones. "It does not matter if many or few cyclones have been forecast, Cuba is in a cyclo-genetic region and you always have to be well prepared," the note insists.

For this season the names of tropical cyclones have already been chosen: Arlene (already assigned to a subtropical storm that formed in January), Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin, Gert, Harold, Idalia, José, Katia, Lee, Margot, Nigel, Ophelia, Philippe, Rina, Sean, Tammy, Vince and Whitney.

The meteorological stations and the Forecast Group of the Provincial Meteorological Center of Ciego de Ávila are trained and prepared for the monitoring and forecasting of tropical cyclones. The Forecast Group will keep the entire population informed through social networks.
