The president of the Commission for Education, Culture, Science, Technology and the Environment of the National Assembly of People's Power, PhD in Sciences Martha del Carmen Mesa Valenciano urged to multiply the impacts of the University Máximo Gómez Báez (UNICA) of Ciego de Ávila in the socioeconomic spheres of the territory.

The projects of the house of higher studies, always at the center of the country's perspectives, must be more deeply embedded in the strategic lines of municipal development, she pointed out from the beginning of her exchange with professors and students.

"If there are university students who in their research will carry out aspects of the well-known strategic lines, they first have to know them, debate them, question them, give criteria for improvement," she said.

She exemplified biases with the total absence of such projects related to local tourism, at the same time that she called to consider who are the ideal ones to design them, what type of financing should be assigned to them and how important are, at the same time, the practical results and professional improvement.

Without denying the above, Yurisbel Gallardo Ballat, rector of UNICA, defended that the existing alliance between the knowledge sector and the resolution of territorial problems is such that more than 90 percent of the degree theses in the last two years have that purpose.

"That is the fundamental role of the seven faculties and the nine municipal university centers from science, technology and innovation," Gallardo Ballat alleged, while referring to the Rincón los Hondones landscape-focused school farm in the Chambas municipality, recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

In agreement, the director of Science, Technology and Innovation, Hubert Martínez Rodríguez, remarked that "although before work was immersed and only focused on teaching activity, today active participation and impact are achieved beyond the walls of UNICA, which was superior from a total synchronization with the government structures and companies that do not know the role that is played here”.

Later, Mesa Valenciano asked professors and the university administration not to give high responsibilities to those who are not fully trained to face them, despite the prevailing deficit of human resources.

Today, it is necessary for the University to be in charge of seeking initiatives to increase the number of students, thinking above all of workers, residents of vulnerable communities with distance career options (Accounting and Finance, Sociocultural Management for Development and Law).

In this regard, Mesa Valenciano also referred that among the demands of the Ciego de Ávila University is to achieve more solid connections with secondary education in relation to vocational training.

At the end of his speech, he called not to cease, but to increase the level of challenges against the growing ideological subversion and cultural colonization from digital spaces that has affected us for years with high degrees of intensity.

For its contributions to teaching and his laudable journey through the Education sector, the rector Gallardo Ballat and the president of the Ciego de Ávila´s University Student Federation, Cristian Gómez Palomino, recognized Mesa Valenciano with the University Shield, one of the highest distinctions granted by the house of higher studies.
