María Esther, cuando el amor se prende a la tierra

Guantanamera, from the root to the essence, found love in Ciego de Ávila, and here she has been germinating for just over six years. And germinating is literal, because María Esther Montalvo, with her 60 years, gives birth to the land that she cultivates and guards with passion, nestled in the organoponic El Jiquí.

She is in charge of the small group and is the only woman. The other three are men who respect and admire this woman who has been betting on urban and suburban agriculture for almost three years, working alongside them and being an example. She says that she has no complaint about them. They are a team.

She talks with pleasure about the crops they grow there: carrot, radish, garlic joint, lettuce, spinach, chard, beans, cucumber, onion, chili pepper, beet. They also have medicinal plants. Links with the delegation.

She is a a technician in Zootechnics, to which she dedicated herself for 33 years, in her native Guantánamo, and empirically reaches agriculture. She feels highly motivated by the Food Sovereignty Plan and from that admirable little organoponic center, she supplies not only the surrounding community, but also three health centers.

Her bond with the Federation of Cuban Women materializes it precisely with her agricultural activism. "Here they come to do volunteer work and then it seems that I multiply myself", she confesses.

She has four children, who are proud of her mother, who claims to be a normal woman, who likes to spend time at home, but who feels enchanted by the land and committed to feeding the people. That's why from sunrise to sunset, she hugs the land.
