Early childhood is conceived as the first educational evel of general educatio with two modalities of attention: the institutional one (kindergarten and pre-school classrooms), and the non-institutional one corresponds to Educate Your Child Programme (P.E.T.H by its acronym in Spanish).
There are 34 kindergartens in the province with an enrollment rate of 5,561 children.
There are 138 primary schools with an enrollment rate of 3,834 children.
We have 841 teachers in kindergartens: 233 graduates, 230 masters, and 193 medium educational level, which 118 out of them are studying to get a degree.
In the P.E.T.H, 17,499 children out of 17,507 are being taking care of, which represents 99,8%. These children are distributed in 61 popular councils and 4 special constituencies, including 2 of them in the Turquino Plan in Chambas and Florencia.
The curriculum put into practice in Early Childhood is the same for both modalities, although the organisational forms are different: to achieve the maximum possible development in children from birth to 6 years old.
We are carrying out an improvement process as well as the rest of the educational levels in the popular council Onelio Hernández, ''Año Internacional del Niño'' kindergarten, and extends to each kindergarten in every municipality.
Family plays an important role in both modalities, due to the abidance the community must give to the children's educational process.

P.E.T.H. main mission is to prepare families to become protagonists of their children's education and preparation for their transition to primary school.
The curriculum is the same for both modalities of care, and it's being improved in the popular council Indalecio Montejo Gómez. The objectives in children from zero to six years old are the same: to achieve the maximum development in each possible child for their transition to primary school.
