25 cedros y dos razones en Morón

The planting of 25 cedars in the Humedal Grande Park, a local development project of the municipality of Morón, alludes to the years of creation of the state forest service and the efforts being made to recover forest ecosystems.

Representatives of the Provincial Company for the Protection of Flora and Fauna, the Territorial Delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment; the Nicolás Guillén Foundation, the State Forest Service, the Municipal Government of People's Power and Park workers; they were part of this initiative, which is part of the actions carried out in the United Nations Decade on the Restoration of Ecosystems (2021-2030).

The efforts made in the municipality of Morón, during the last 15 years, allowed increasing the forest index from 32 to 41.32%, despite the economic limitations existing in the country and the negative effects of weather events, fires and logging.

“The forest patrimony of the territory of Morón is 72,825 hectares, 52,000 of wooded area. For the year 2021, the planting of 40 hectares of forests is planned and the recovery of another 36, tasks in which the companies Forestal Integral and Pecuaria Genetica Turiguanó will intervene, by planting varieties such as mahogany, cedar, yarú, baría and casuarina”, Ernesto García Sánchez, head of the municipal State Forest Service, highlighted.

The deforested area in the locality is 1,440 hectares (340 corresponding to the Company for the Protection of Flora and Fauna, and 1,100 under the jurisdiction of the Integral Forest Company), "that should be planted in the next decade, however, we must consider that there are also fires and fellings that favor the reduction of these resources," the source itself said.

The territory has a forest development fund, equivalent to 465,000 pesos, destined to plantations and reconstruction of wooded areas, the construction of firebreaking trails and the financing of 11 conservation projects that are in charge of the Company for the Protection of the Flora and Fauna.

In Cuba, there is a government plan for the prevention and confrontation of crimes and illegalities that affect forest resources, flora, wild fauna and other natural assets; which includes indirect actions that contribute to reforestation: promoting the use of recycled paper, choosing the digital mode before printed documentation, and deploying projects and activities at the community level that raise awareness and work towards reforesting sensitive areas.
