The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba elected Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez as its First Secretary. The last day of the party meeting where the new Central Committee, the Political Bureau and the Secretariat of the party organization were announced began at 10:00 o´clock in the morning, at the Havana Convention Center.
In his central report, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz said that Díaz-Canel is not the result of improvisation, but of a thoughtful selection of a young revolutionary with the conditions to be promoted to higher positions.
“He successfully heaeded, during 15 years, as First Secretary of the Party in the provinces of Villa Clara and Holguín, after which he was designated Minister of Higher Education, Vice President of the Council of Ministers and First Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers, positions that he combined with the attention of the ideological front in the Party”.
He also stressed that in the last three years, Díaz-Canel has been able to form a team and promote cohesion with the higher bodies of the Party, the State and the Government.
In this way, the Army General, culminates his work as First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, satisfied, as he expressed, of the "fulfilled duty and confidence in the future of the Homeland, with the thoughtful conviction of not accepting proposals to stay in the higher organs of the party organization, in whose ranks I will continue to be a revolutionary fighter, ready to make my modest contribution until the end of my life”.
