Pluto: operación fracasada (II Parte y Final)

With the support of the US navy and aviation, the mercenaries landed on April 17, 1961 at Playa Girón and Playa Larga, in the Bay of Pigs.

The self-proclaimed “patriots” made up a troop of 1,500 men (former landowners, homeowners, merchants, industrialists, and former soldiers of the Batista army; among them, 14 war criminals), who called themselves saviors of the Cuban people and harbored hope to add him to his group.

To the exclamations of "surrender!" and the fire of enemy weapons, the militiamen offered a tenacious resistance and launched their cry of war and victory: "Homeland or Death! We will win!"

The invasion was repelled by the Cienfuegos militia battalion, the Revolutionary National Police, and planes of the Revolutionary Air Force. Subsequently, the battalion of the Matanzas Militia Responsible School, two columns of the Rebel Army and several militia battalions joined the combat. Meanwhile, in the cities, the people organized in the CDR paralyzed, with an iron hand, any possibility of counterrevolutionary action.

In the fighting the pilots stood out for their heroism, who, with old planes, shot down twelve enemy aircraft and four ships. They were able to carry out suicidal actions, as a result of which two lost their lives.

Days after the attack, Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz pointed out: “What the planes and the few pilots, that we have, did; it was a real feat… Our pilots behaved with extraordinary courage… every time they shot down an airplane the ardor of the pilots grew. They even discussed the place to go to attack ..."

The struggle was characterized by the heroism of all the combatants, who honored the word promised on April 16, 1961, when Fidel proclaimed the socialist character of the Cuban Revolution, during the burial of the victims of the criminal bombings.

The people had raised their rifles and sworn to defend the homeland to the last drop of blood. With that fervor, the enemy could not. On the 18th, the invaders began to retreat and flee in terror; some tried to re-embark. In Playa Larga, Yaguaramas, San Blas and other points, they were evicted from their positions, concentrating on Playa Girón, where the last enemy stronghold fell at 5:30 pm on April 19, 1961, with which the first materialized defeat of US imperialism in Latin America.

Referring to the then US president, in an interview with Ignacio Ramonet, the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, he said: “He believed in the plan drawn up by the CIA and the Pentagon, he believed in the propaganda that ensured as Bush claimed before the attack to Iraq in April 2003, that the people would join the invaders that the militias would not fight and that they would rise up against the government of the nation.

“Kennedy hesitated and in the end, faced with the difficulties of the invaders, decided to give them air support, but when they were going to give it there were no longer any mercenaries, because in 68 hours our counterattack completely liquidated that expedition. A tough defeat for the empire. And a great humiliation”.
