Amplificador de oleaje beneficia ecosistema costero de Cayo Coco

The wave amplifier has restored vitality to the inner lagoon..

The wave amplifier built in the Jardines del Rey tourist destination has a positive impact on the recovery of the inland lagoon near the Colonial, Tryp Cayo Coco and Iberostar Mojito hotels, by maintaining stable conditions in that coastal ecosystem.

Rolando Barroso Vargas, specialist of the Delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA by its Spanish initials) in Ciego de Ávila, explained that “this system consists of a channel of approximately 100 meters, with gates, and takes advantage of maritime energy to allow the entry and exit of water, which progressively restores vitality to the natural reservoir, previously with a single entry from the east position. When it reached the west, the liquid was dead and clogged, therefore, the fish lacked oxygen and life was scarce”.

The solution is the result of cooperation ties between the Coastal Ecosystem Research Center (CIEC) and the Autonomous University of Mexico, who implemented a new project to re-feed the coastal dune, also with effects on the cleaning of the resort, taking into account that the lagoon works as a biodigester filter for impurities from the beaches.

Barroso Vargas stressed that the amplifier allows the dissipation of wave energy to be established in an aquatic environment and progressively, avoiding an action-reaction impact.

"It is a mechanism in harmony with nature, which regulates the entry and exit of water through a system of gates, capable of preventing floods," he clarified.
