Especialistas desmienten presencia de nuevas cepas de SARS-CoV-2 en Ciego de Ávila

Authorities from the Roberto Rodríguez Fernández hospital, in Morón, and the molecular biology laboratory at that medical institution, denied rumors about the circulation of new strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the province.

According to statements offered to the Invasor newspaper by doctors Juan Carlos Villares, director of Roberto Rodríguez, and Niuris Martín Pérez, deputy director of medical assistance, there is no evidence that new strains of the virus are circulating in the territory so far.

In the same way, they clarified that it is not their responsibility to verify the existence of new variants and mutational patterns, investigations carried out by specialists from the Pedro Kourí Center for Tropical Medicine (IPK), the person in charge of the study in this regard, in which all the provinces are included, which is why a group of positive samples, with different levels of viral load, was sent to the capital to be analyzed.

Questioned by Granma, Dr. Ángel Enrique Batista Díaz, director of health in Ciego de Ávila, said that from the virological point of view the province has a behavior similar to that of the rest of the country and shows stability in the state of the epidemic, due to in the last week, the trend is a decrease in the number of active cases and a lesser spread of the disease, with effects in only two of the 10 municipalities.

Similarly, the director explained, there is no marked increase in the number of serious and critical cases, indicators that have a similar behavior to the previous fortnight and month.

Batista Díaz called for extreme security measures, physical distancing and discipline of the population, since investigations carried out in the territory show that a level of indiscipline persists that can compromise the favorable evolution of the epidemic.
