Food sovereignty and nutritional education are priorities defined by the Cuban government in the economic and social development plan until 2030, Reina de la Caridad Torres Pérez and Rafael Pérez Carmenate, deputies and members of the Agri-Food Commission of the National Assembly of the Popular Power, ratified.

During their intervention in the Virtual Colloquium: Science, Innovation and Food Sovereignty in line with territorial development, they highlighted that the economic, commercial and financial blockade constitutes the greatest obstacle to achieve this goal, by limiting the possibilities of access to external financing, direct foreign investment, technologies, inputs, agricultural means, as well as the realization of academic exchanges with specialists from other nations.

“Despite this, the Cuban State implements policies that contribute to guarantee food and population security, as a result of the strengthening of local, sovereign and sustainable systems, based on the participation of all actors linked to production, transformation, commercialization, consumption and the formation of a nutritional culture to improve the health of the population”, Pérez Carmenate highlighted.

He, also Delegate of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in the territory of Ciego de Ávila, stressed that actions are carried out to promote the culture of innovation, increase the training of professionals and technicians to meet the demands of the agro-industrial sector, achieve greater dissemination of the knowledge and assimilation of technology, guarantee the adequate exploitation of natural resources such as soils and water, make better use of information and communication technologies, improve seed production and ensure the availability of packaging for industrial productions.

As strengths for the fulfillment of the Program, the province of Ciego de Ávila has seven agro-productive centers and one of them classified as exporter, D ’Cballos Agro-industrial Company, where 14 exportable rubles are counted and 19 products are worked for commercialization abroad.

Likewise, there are five companies and 11 base business units, 28 basic cooperative production units, 23 agricultural production cooperatives and 86 credit and service cooperatives, which contribute 78% of the territory's agricultural production.

More than 15 thousand landholders are added, as owners or usufructuaries; Food Industry entities, the Azcuba business group, mini-industries and processing centers. As a transcendental element, the existence of 12 registered trademarks stands out, with a presence in the national and international market.

The integration of scientific and educational centers to the productive bases represents another guarantee for the fulfillment of the goals proposed in the Program.

Torres Pérez, head of the Department of Information and Social Communication of the Provincial Government of Popular Power in Ciego de Ávila, emphasized that the management of the Plan requires appropriate communication channels that facilitate access to knowledge and encourage consultation for strategic decision-making.

“Effective governance cannot be exercised without timely and reliable information that flows harmoniously between all the actors and entities of public and popular intervention. The information must favor the management of productive capacities, taking into account the particularities of each territory.

“This implies the use of data to increase innovation capacities, recombining and identifying new uses of existing knowledge, based on our local realities. It is also vital to conceive new and continuous channels of communication, through which dialogue and participation are promoted, from the interaction and socialization of this knowledge, ”she specified.

Reina de la Caridad also highlighted the decisive role of the media in the formation of good nutritional practices that lead to an improvement in the quality of life of the people.

The Virtual Colloquium, developed in greeting to the 62nd anniversary of the signing of the Agrarian Reform Law and the Day of the Peasant, had the participation of prestigious university professors, jurists, social communicators and journalists from various provinces of the country, who, grouped in Three panels shared their experiences on the subject.
