Negociar la vida

Two weeks ago a desperate friend to save her mother, paid 1,500 pesos for a blister (three pills) of azithromycin; two days ago, a colleague from Radio Surco denounced on her Facebook profile the illegal sale of the same amount of the drug itself, at the price of 4000 pesos! It seems that the value of drugs in the informal market is proportional to the worsening of the pandemic.

The illegal marketing of drugs is a phenomenon that has proliferated in Cuba, although in a more discreet way, in recent years. The instability in the production of drugs, mainly due to limitations in acquiring raw materials, as a consequence of the US economic blockade against Cuba, has conditioned a growth of these events, apart from the efforts made by the control and operational control bodies to enforce the law.

In the midst of the health crisis generated by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the deepening of the economic siege against the Island, tensions are heightened due to the impossibility of producing sufficient quantities to satisfy health needs, a situation that unscrupulous individuals take advantage in order to profit at the cost of adversity.

Logic indicates that a large part of the drugs proposed for sale in public spaces such as social networks - essentially in Revolico, which has become a platform for illegalities, crimes and even subversion against Cuba - are taken from healthcare centers because, you will hardly find azithromycin in a pharmacy and Rocephin is only for intrahospital use.

The popular saying states it: "Green and spiky, soursop!" In addition, there is no possibility of confusion between nationally produced medicines and those imported by people who travel abroad, because the presentations are different.

However, whatever the origin, the sale of drugs is an illegitimate act, deserving of popular repudiation, although in moments of desperation the laws are transgressed and human values are forgotten during purchases of doubtful medicines? origin, even by the same people who wonder if they come from criminal acts such as stopping supplying them to patients for whom they were destined.

Although we may not be able to perceive it when the life of a loved one depends on those procedures, in these events “as bad to steal a horse as it is to stand by and look on”, as an aphorism also states. Certainly, the theft and sale are the most questionable facts, however, the purchase is a way to become accomplices of who knows what monstrosity.

In recent months, with more force in recent weeks, social networks have also been a platform for complaints from hundreds of citizens, mostly concerned about the obvious origin of drugs and the application of abusive prices, however, as said this Saturday the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz Canel-Bermúdez, we have been passive in the face of these incidents.

If those responsible ones for containing such events - directors and workers of health care centers, control bodies and operational confrontation - did not feel sufficient responsibility and commitment to act rigorously in the face of popular demands, now it is a government decision, accompanied by a clear sentence : "There can be no contemplation with the illegal sale of drugs."

Since this Friday, the Temporary Provincial Group for the Prevention, Confrontation and Control of COVID-19, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca, reported the identification of events of this nature in the provincial hospitals of Ciego de Ávila and Morón, and issued precise guidelines to attack those who have the impudence and shamelessness to put a price on our lives, precisely in times of pandemic.
