La inmunización en tiempos de Delta

In the municipality of Morón, the antibody titers are close to trigger in the first inoculated patients with the anti-Covid-19 Abdala vaccine. Experts affirm that the effectiveness of the immunogenic medication begins 15 days after receiving the third dose.

At this point in the "championship", Morón`s citizens would be in a better position to face the epidemiological complexities, but the emergence of the Delta variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its high transmission, have limited many of them from the possibility of immunization or conclude with the vaccination schedule. Thus, for many people, the Abdala dream is diluted and transformed into the hope of receiving, at the end of two months of convalescence, the single dose of Soberana Plus.

The prevailing epidemiological scenario in the territory of Ciego de Ávila and the fatal coincidence with the health intervention process also reduces the possibilities of action of Abdala, a vaccine with proven efficacy in reducing serious and critical states, deaths and infections.

The high transmission of the disease and the appearance of the Delta variant are presented as disadvantages for the achievement of herd immunity, at least within the anticipated period. This SARS-CoV-2 mutation, according to the criteria of experts from the Infectious Diseases Society of America, imposes modifications in this process, essential to slow the advance of the pandemic: for the original virus, an estimated 70% of the population, meanwhile, with Delta, the calculations are at 90%.

“It is a complex task, based on evidence of the control of diseases such as measles, diphtheria and smallpox, which were eradicated by achieving a high number of immune individuals, an effective mechanism to prevent the spread.

"If only a minimal number of people are infected, the virus or infectious agent will have to disappear, thereby also avoiding mutations and the appearance of new variants," Doctor of Medical Sciences Jacqueline Díaz Luis, a second-degree specialist in Immunology, from the Roberto Rodríguez General Teaching Hospital, explained.

The practitioner ensures that the percentage of herd immunity is a variable figure, which depends on multiple factors, such as the virulence of the strains, contagion capacity, and the characteristics of the hosts or people susceptible to infection. This last factor has undergone substantial changes as many subjects are included and there is a high dispersion.

With the circulation of the Delta variant, new complications are faced. While the virus is spreading, the chances of mutating are greater, hence the need to vaccinate more people and for individuals to act responsibly when complying with preventive measures.

Díaz Luis specified that vaccines continue to be the effective and recommended "weapon" for the present and future, with a view to achieve control of a disease that is causing a global health crisis, and, at the same time, the trigger for economic, political and social problems all over the world.

“Vaccine preparations are the hope to minimize the consequences of the disease (severity, critical states and death), until the virus is eliminated. It is the reason why Cuba has organized an inclusive immunization process against COVID-19, which requires conscious and responsible participation, while continuing to comply with the preventive measures directed by the Ministry of Public Health”, he added.
