    Covid-19: cuidado con la automedicación

Although patients are given a nasopharyngeal exudate, which can be performed different types of determinations and thus diagnose the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, this is not the only procedure that is taken into account during the uncertainty of being positive or not.

For this reason, Dr. Manuel Romero Placeres, head of the Department of STIs and HIV / AIDS of the Ministry of Public Health, explains that “it is important that everyone who has symptoms go immediately to the doctor, because being in a care center, it has the possibility of acting more quickly in the event of any complication associated with the disease”.

The specialist warns that the first signs may be slight, such as the presence of rhinorrhea (nasal congestion), headache or a dry cough, and then nothing else will happen. "But with these symptoms the virus can pass from the area of the throat and nose to the lungs, and then begin a bronchial process."

Romero Placeres does not recommend self-medication with drugs such as azithromycin or rocephin, a trend in the population of Ciego de Ávila that remains at home.

“Medicines for viruses are called antivirals. Azithromycin is a drug that is used as an antibiotic for bacteria, which is not the case. The same thing happens with the rocephin. Both are used for pneumonia because at first it can be caused by the virus, but later, if it gets complicated, we are already talking about a bacterium. Both can only be supplied by medical indication, and in the case of the second one, it is exclusively for intra-hospital use.

"Antibiotics must be used at the right time for the treatment of bacterial pneumonias, not in the initial process, because they can create a subsequent resistance to the virus," he emphasizes.

The head of the Department of STIs and HIV / AIDS of the Ministry of Public Health maintains that patients, upon arrival at care centers, are treated with Nasalferon and interferons, in this case Heberón or HeberFerón.

“Another of the treatments we are using is the application of Biomodulin T, a process that began with people over 65 years of age, who are given four doses of the drug every three or four days, depending on the population."

The doctor also made reference to the automated telephone method of knowing the results of the PCR, by dialing 18826 (free service) from 72 hours after the nasopharyngeal exudate was performed. When leaving, the operator must dial the identity card number and wait until the answer is known.

“Since this system began on August 8, 18,319 sample results have been uploaded to the databases, of which 6,109 were positive and 12,210 were negative.”
