Young people from Ciego de Ávila helping residents of vulnerable communities

Builders, students, workers, intellectuals, scientists, athletes, soldiers and young people from different sectors strengthen ties and merge in multisector effort as members of the Youth Social Work Brigades (BJTS by its Spanish initials), which in Ciego de Ávila work in 21 vulnerable communities.

Lianet Pazo Cedeño, first secretary of the Union of Young Communists (UJC) in Ciego de Ávila, told Granma that the group is made up of more than 200 young people who work in the 10 municipalities of the territory.

He said that the BJTS are conformed by a broad representation of university students pursuing careers in the humanities profile, young professors from higher education centers, general secretaries of the base committees of the UJC and social workers.

In addition, social workers, representations of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, the Federation of Cuban Women and community leaders are part of the advanced contingents. The objective is to diagnose and raise the main problems and help in possible solutions, while «sometimes, they are in the population centers themselves, in the popular councils, the districts; in the neighborhoods themselves”, Pazo Cedeño said.

In September 2017, among the communities where they work, a large part of them in difficult-to-access areas, are La Serrana, Korea, Malezal, El Minjial, El Lowrey, Derramadero, La Aguadita, Batey Viejo, San Isidro and the districts 22 and 27 of the Council Popular of Punta Alegre, very hit by the passage of Hurricane Irma.

In a recent Twitter, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Party and President of the Republic of Cuba, highlighted the importance of the creation of Youth Social Work Brigades, to work in 302 vulnerable communities in the country.

The president wrote in his account: «Our young people founding, participating and contributing. We feel pride, respect, admiration and affection for them».
