Investigaciones favorecen adaptación al cambio climático

The partial results of four projects, executed by the company Geocuba, will favor adaptation to climate change in strategic sectors such as agriculture, where the greatest impacts are expected in the province of Ciego de Ávila.

The rise in sea level, with a negative impact on the salinization of waters and soils, represents a challenge to develop this economic line of local and national interest, the Master of Science Homero Menéndez Pérez, director of the Geocuba Remote Sensing Agency, explained.

Actions such as the rearrangement and rotation of crops, the use of more resistant plant species and reforestation are imposed, as appropriate and determined by the competent authorities and institutions when using the knowledge and socialized tools, he stressed.

He stressed that the Workshop "Partial results of projects financed by the National Environment Fund (FNMA)", carried out in the territory of Ciego de Ávila, provided elements for decision-making when characterizing the natural resources and environmental quality of marine and coastal ecosystems in the province.

The partial reports of these investigations are integrated into two others: the Climate Change Adaptation Plan and the Spatial Data Infrastructure of the Life Task (IDEVIDA), he specified.

These are studies that integrate specialists from different branches (Hydrography and Geodesy, Geography, Geology, Biology and Chemistry) and join forces of the institutes of Geophysics and Astronomy, Ecology and Systematics, Marine Studies and Tropical Geography, he said.

The Bio-food research centers (CIBA) and Coastal Ecosystems (CIEC), both in the region, are added to this, he argued.

Research on vegetation, broken down by municipalities, alludes to the existence of more than 1,035 square kilometers covered with marabou, a species that affects grasslands and crops such as sugarcane, which constitutes a problem to be solved, with the help of the map where it is identified the presence of that plant, he emphasized.

As it emerged, another of the contributions is the hydrological map, where the hydrographic basins of the main rivers, lagoons, dams and micro-dams, with their respective regulatory strips, in addition to the derivatives and channels, were represented.

Science Doctor Dayamit Ojeda Martínez, senior researcher and head of the Remote Sensing Group of the Geocuba Remote Sensing Agency, highlighted that the investigations in the marine-coastal ecosystems allowed the execution of space-temporal analyzes of the behavior of the coastline.

Likewise, the state of mangroves, coral reefs and sea grasses were evaluated; and the state of conservation of the vegetation of the beaches located in the north of the province was determined, he detailed.

The Doctor of Science Rafael Cruz Iglesias, director of the GeoMIX Agency, attached to Geocuba, said that IDEVIDA allows access, via the web, to different maps and images, incorporates heat source services and weather information.

Ciego de Ávila is the initiator of these projects, planned to be expanded, depending on financial availability: the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud and the provinces of Artemisa and Mayabeque would be the next territories to be investigated, the Geocuba specialists reported.
