The connection to the National Electric System (SEN) of the first bioelectric plant in the country, adjacent to the Ciro Redondo sugar plant, is scheduled for December 20, according to what was known during a work visit made to Ciego de Ávila by Vice Prime Minister Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca.

This plant, whose construction began in April 2017, is designed to burn sugarcane bagasse and other biomass, such as marabou. By entering into stable operation, it will save 100,000 tons of oil per year, as well as stop emitting 300 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

As part of the visit, Tapia Fonseca went to the nearby Ciro Redondo power station, whose director, Vidal Martín Sarduy, explained that the colossus must start the sugar campaign with a plan of 674,000 tons of cane to be processed, to produce some 62,000 of raw sugar.

After undergoing an investment process aimed at increasing its potential capacity –including the installation, in the agricultural part, of 44 irrigation machines and other systems, covering more than 7,000 hectares–, the Ciro Redondo has the potential to become a reference at the national level in the production of sugar, in addition to be linked to the aforementioned bioelectric plant.
