Sixty years ago, a war against ignorance was successfully waged in Cuba, an event that constituted one of the most beautiful and noble tasks carried out after the triumph of the Revolution: The Literacy Campaign, which culminated in the eradication of illiteracy in Cuba, a work in which adolescents and young people taught to read and write to people of any age, in the most remote places of the country.

The idea was announced during the graduation of the first contingent of Volunteer Teachers, on August 29, 1960. A short time later, on December 31, Fidel reiterated the need to eradicate illiteracy in one year, so the next day began officially the Literacy Campaign.

Everything takes place in a very turbulent time in which the United States government breaks diplomatic relations with the island, and groups arise that in their eagerness to overthrow the Revolution carry out various counterrevolutionary actions, such as the assassination of the young volunteer teacher Conrado Benítez, on January 5, 1961.

Other atrocious events would occur, such as the murder, by counterrevolutionary gangs, of the young man of only 16 years old, Manuel Ascunce Domenech, together with his student Pedro Lantigua Ortega, at Palmarito Ranch, on November 26, almost at the end of the campaign.

However, nothing could stop the colossal work, and on December 22, 1961 in the Revolution Square, Fidel announced the completion of the Literacy Campaign; in his speech, he expressed: “No more solemn and exciting moment, no instant of legitimate pride and glory, like this in which four and a half centuries of ignorance have been overthrown. We have won a great battle, and it must be called that -battle-, because the victory against illiteracy in our country has been achieved through a great fight, with all the rules of a great combat”. Moreover, the brigadiers responded: Fidel, tell us what else we have to do!

The Campaign in Cuba showed that the literacy of a people, as well as the educational fact itself, is a cultural event whose success depends on the massive and unanimous participation of all existing organizations and all sectors of the population, without neglecting their organizational technician aspect.

The third year of the Revolution, 1961, was decisive for the history of the Cuban people. To the proclamation of the socialist character of the Revolution, the victory of Playa Girón and other important events was added the Literacy Campaign. On December 22, 1961, Cuba was proclaimed a Territory Free of Illiteracy.

Thus, every December 22, we remember a literacy that crossed hills and early mornings, a campaign that made history in Cuba; and we celebrate, we toast those educators who love their profession, who become father and mother to their students. CONGRATULATIONS EDUCATORS!!!
