The timely detection of pregnant women at risk in the north-central region of the territory of Ciego de Ávila is part of the actions carried out by specialists from the Roberto Rodríguez Provincial General Teaching Hospital to improve the results of the Maternal and Child Care Program (PAMI) in 2022.

This work is developed in conjunction with those responsible in the municipalities to determine the pregnant women who require specialized assistance or income, Dr. Reinerio Rubio Rojas, deputy director of PAMI in that health institution, explained.

With the advice of a work team from the Ministry of Public Health, pregnant women with 26 or more weeks were also reassessed, from which admissions to maternity homes and hospital were decided, and referrals to specialists to treat different ailments, he stressed.

He emphasized that the improvement of the PAMI includes the readjustment of the assistance protocols and the permanent training of medical personnel, guarantees to reverse the unfavorable indicators of the stage that is ending.

Another strength is the existing conditions in the Pregnant A Room of the referred hospital center, where highly qualified medical and nursing staff treat pregnant women with pathologies such as diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure and infections associated with pregnancy, he explained.

Recently renovated and with a capacity for 32 patients, this area of income maintains an adequate state for pregnant women, considered very susceptible patients, Rubio Rojas said.

At the end of the current year, the province of Ciego de Ávila exhibits unfavorable indicators in the PAMI, with an infant mortality rate of 13.8 per thousand live births and the death of eight maternal deaths, figures also related to difficulties in monitoring pregnant women in the pandemic period, he stated.

Although it was not the essential cause, it had a negative impact, as most of the personnel and hospitals were assigned to control this disease, which decreased the quality of care for pregnant women and newborns, Dr. Luis Carmenate Martínez, head of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Group, and PAMI official in the province, alleged.

To improve the indicators, it is planned to improve health care, complete the basic work groups and meet the needs of specialists in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, to which training processes and preparation of new professionals are taxed, he argued.

He specified that hospital centers and basic work groups do not present difficulties with specialists in Obstetrics and Gynecology; however, training in this specialty and in others such as Perinatology and Imaging is prioritized, which will represent a strength in the near future.

Likewise, conditions improve in the areas linked to PAMI, including the restoration of the Genetics Center, the rooms for pregnant women and neonatology, the delivery and curettage accommodations, and the creation of a milk bank that will provide the liquid of its kind to premature infants to avoid nutritional and digestive disorders, he added.

The actions carried out in the territory also respond to the call of Deputy Prime Minister Jorge Luis Perdomo Di-Lella to improve the work systems in primary and secondary health care to correct the unfavorable results of the PAMI in the last four years.

The senior leader pointed out that this territory presents the most deteriorated indicators in the country, when Tomás Alexis Martín Venegas, governor of the province of Ciego de Ávila, appeared in the recent rendering of account.
