Ciego de Ávila alerta: ya ataca Ómicron

The highest authorities of the main municipality have understood that COVID-19 is not finished, even though 95 percent of the population of Ciego de Ávila completed their three-dose vaccination scheme and went for the reinforcement. This Tuesday, the Temporary Working Group in the territory decided to reinforce containment measures to avoid a scenario like last summer.

These are the new provisions, according to a Facebook post by the first party secretary in the municipality, Julio Gómez Casanova:

1- Require in each labor entity the vaccination card with the reinforcement applied.

2- Initiate in each Popular Council an intensive program for booster vaccination.

3- Develop discussions in all labor and student groups to increase prevention measures.

4- Increase the information and orientation to the people of the real situation of the municipality.

5- Rise the control actions by the State Sanitary Inspection, the Comprehensive Supervision Directorate and the imposing agencies.

6- Suspend large-format activities, such as Palmares in the City Park, the Artex patio and the Hotel Rueda.

The measures related to vaccination have already generated opinions and concerns, because, although the immunization process is progressing throughout the province, there are still people without access to vaccines (either because they lost the scheme, are allergic or were not immunized in his moment). Let's add that, until last December 30, only 55 percent of the population of the main municipality had come to receive the booster dose.

As information and individual responsibility are lacking, the indication of the health authorities to the population is to approach their offices of the Family Doctor and Nurse.

• To increase discipline in the face of a growth in COVID-19.

In addition, the sooner they do it the better. Since last Thursday, Ciego de Ávila returned to the double-digit report, with a daily average of 12 autochthonous cases. As we had pointed out in a previous note, imports have tripled in recent days.

Looking back, exactly a year ago we had lower numbers and we already know what came next.

With the predominance of the beta variant then, it took two months to control the epidemiological scenario. We said that delta was three times more contagious than beta, and an omicron had to appear to break the predictions. Experts say that it is spread faster than measles, an undisputed record holder so far.

In that sense, and in my strict opinion, the measures arrive a week late and, knowing the presence of omicron in 72 samples from 12 Cuban provinces (I suppose Ciego de Ávila is among them, judging by our "luck") from December 25, we should expect this super contagious variant to “walk” among us.

The only incentive for a return to scare figures is that, for the moment, omicron produces milder symptoms, fewer pulmonary complications and is primed among unimmunized people. According to the experience of countries that are already experiencing the new wave of infections, the hospitalized and reported severity curves are far from that of daily cases. However, it is not a cold and that's it. Dr. Daniel García does not lose sympathy when sharing his alert.

Since this Tuesday the bells are ringing for another variant discovered in France, but some experts are already anticipating to calm our anxieties by assuring that it is a lineage derived from variant B.1.640, which, in turn, was identified in September past, without being able to override delta.

Conclusion: soak your fences, that is, take care of yourself and others.
