Detectan variante Ómicron en Ciego de Ávila

Ciego de Ávila is among the eleven provinces of the country with confirmed cases of Omicron, the new variant of the SARS CoV2 coronavirus, detected in Cuba last December, and which in recent days has increased the number of infected people in the national territory, according to statements by José Ángel Portal Miranda, Minister of Public Health (Minsap).

During the first meeting of the Temporary Working Group for the Confrontation and Control of COVID-19 of the Government of Havana, the head of the Ministry of Health explained that between December 26 and January 3, 92 have been detected in the country cases with the omicron variant. Moreover, 63 Cubans and 29 foreigners; 33 people with sources of infection abroad and 59 infected ones in the country.

Miranda Portal also added that the epidemiological situation of the country has become more complex in the last 15 days, with 2375 active cases of COVID-19, the highest figure since October, and in turn, the incidence rate increased in all provinces, mainly in Pinar del Río, Matanzas and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud.

According to the head of the Minsap, in addition to Ciego de Ávila, the omicron variant has also been detected in Pinar del Río, Artemisa, Havana, Mayabeque, Cienfuegos, Matanzas, Camagüey, Las Tunas and Holguín.

For his part, Dr.C. Raúl Guinovart Díaz, dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computing at the University of Havana, from the usual analysis of the mathematical models for the confrontation with the new coronavirus, predicts a daily growth of the positive cases to COVD-19 for the coming weeks, and an increase in the incidence of the disease, although not in fatality.

“We are at the beginning of a new wave of infections, however, the Cuban population has greater strength with it, from the vaccination campaign, but that advantage must be accompanied by compliance with the corresponding sanitary measures in such a way that the disease does not reach alarming numbers of spread", the mathematician warned.

This Wednesday, the upturn in infected people continues, with 967 new cases of COVID-19 being reported in the country and no deaths, according to the official part issued by the Ministry of Public Health.
