Acueducto Ciego de Ávila: en la necesidad de multiplicarse

The last year,2021, provided strong days for the groups of the Ciego de Ávila Aqueduct and Sewerage Company, who undertook works, investments and maintenance for the benefit of the population and the economy.

To a greater or lesser extent, all municipalities of Ciego de Ávila received the favorable impacts of these actions, which in many cases had to be carried out in the context of the difficult conditions imposed by COVID-19, and which caused workforce stoppages and infections.

Based on the tense epidemiological situation in the territory for several months, the priorities were focused on preparing in the shortest possible time the isolation centers for positives, suspects and contacts, a task in which the workers in the sector had a decisive influence when taking services of water and sanitation to them.

"This was a period to multiply, despite the lack of resources such as tires, batteries, fuels, parts and accessories for specialized equipment or not, imposed by the intensification of the blockade and the negative incidence of the pandemic," Wilmer Matos Lambert, CEO of the entity told Invader.

In La Susana community (municipality of Venezuela), around a hundred homes received the water supply service with the construction, in record time, of almost a kilometer of hydraulic networks, thus responding to a historical approach.

In the case of Majagua, company brigades built La Estrella conduit, which contributed to the improvement of the water supply to the main municipality, and which in a second stage will reach Campo Hatuey and Alturas de Campo Hatuey, in order to contribute to the supply of the vital liquid during the dry season.

When the pumping station located in the town of Cabrera was eliminated, the service to the residents was supplied with the execution of a conductor from the neighboring community Las Marías.

During 2021, the Hydraulic Resources system in Ciego de Ávila gave continuity to the investment of the Florencia aqueduct, the only municipal seat that does not have this infrastructure, upon completion of three pumping stations and other objectives that had the contribution of the Cuito Cuanavale contingent. In 2022 these works will continue.

In Chambas, intensive work was done on the rehabilitation of the Punta Alegre water treatment plant and the river water filter system, which made it possible to increase the quality of the vital liquid that reaches the population. The contribution of brigades from a specialized company from Villa Clara was decisive in these tasks.

Regarding the second most important city in Ciego de Ávila, Morón, the Aqueduct workers continued to promote the evacuation of waste through maintenance at the three pumping plants. Likewise, it was possible to materialize the bond of drivers that provides service to the 5,000 newly built homes and take the supply to the Roberto Rodríguez Provincial Hospital; as well as the replacement of a conductor kilometer that, by presenting several leaks, affected a group of buildings in the city.

The year that has just ended brought to the communities of El Yarual and Miraflores Nuevo, in Bolivia, the benefits of water and sanitation, in response to long-standing requests from voters.

Baraguá was not left out of the improvement either, when actions were carried out such as cleaning the ravine of the central-refinery Ecuador, which had not been done for more than two decades, which in rainy weather affected the residents of the area. In addition, pumping equipment was installed in communities and work is being done to bring water to a significant number of homes in Pesquería.

Nevertheless, the work with the greatest impact on Baraguá`s properties will be the investment (there was only the well) of the aqueduct of the community of La Clementina, to which they are giving their final touches these days.

The provincial capital focused its main efforts on the southern part of the city, an area traditionally less served, by means of the suppression of leaks, evacuation of residuals, and installation of connections to a group of houses and investments to sectorize and better manage the supply of Water.

At the same time, other tasks were aimed at solving the intersections of water for human consumption and sewers, the elimination of large obstructions and the suppression of leaks.

On this last issue, the data offered by the entity indicate that a notable improvement was achieved, since if in the period of May and June there were around 2,500 of these unwanted leaks, in the first days of December the report was around 850, although they could be more due to the deteriorated state of the networks.

The positive influence of integrated community work and the satisfaction of forgotten needs demanded more dedication from the Aqueduct workers this year, in which they knew how to grow.

However, and despite the aforementioned limitations that hinder a better job performance, Matos Lambert said that the troops commanded by him are not entirely pleased, given the accumulated problems, and for the solution of which they are willing to work without hours as they have shown it several times; as long as there are dissatisfied residents, their work will not be up to the task.
