Demuestran eficacia de inmunoterapia cubana contra el cáncer de pulmón

A recent study carried out in the Cuban province of Matanzas demonstrated the efficacy of immunotherapy to combat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in advanced stages, based on national biotechnological products.

Favorable indicators in terms of response to treatment, overall survival and quality of life endorse the research, carried out by a team led by Dr. Kirenia Camacho Sosa, who received the territorial award from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA).

The also specialist in oncology declared to the Cuban News Agency that they evaluated the response of people with NSCLC of legal age in advanced stages, between 2011 and 2019, based on several open clinical trials in the locality with the Cimavax-egf products, Vaxira and Nimotuzumab.

Treatment with the monoclonal antibody Nimotuzumab allowed those with lung cancer and brain metastases to survive two months longer than those who did not receive immunotherapy, he said.

The determination of overall survival was 1.23 percent (%) at five years in patients in stage IV, and the modality with the highest survival was immunotherapy, with 3.33%, results superior to the rest of the treatments, he emphasized.

The study that was part of Camacho Sosa's doctoral thesis derives from the work of the Oncology Center belonging to the Comander Faustino Pérez Provincial Hospital, based in this city, as part of an institutional project.
