Soberanía alimentaria centra debates de técnicos agrícolas y forestales

The contribution of members to the improvement of Cuban agriculture and the implementation of the Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Education Program are topics of debate in the assembly process of the VI Congress of the Cuban Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians (ACTAF).

Josefina Córdova Tellería, president of that organization in the territory of Ciego de Ávila, said that from November it happens in unison in grassroots organizations throughout the country, until March they will take place at the municipal level and the provincial meeting is planned for next April 26.

He specified that other topics are being analyzed, such as agro-ecological policies, youth and food sovereignty, and international cooperation, which have generated controversy in the more than 1,200 associates of ACTAF in Ciego de Ávila, grouped in 148 grassroots organizations.

Despite the epidemiological complexities and in line with the nation's economic and social strategy, the Association continued the management and socialization of knowledge between producers and the business system to use sustainable technologies, he alleged.

With telephony and social networks, they maintained links with members, achieving the application of scientific results and agro-ecological techniques that contributed to supply the deficit of chemical products, develop healthier productions and conserve natural resources, he explained.

Córdova Tellería added that the organization delivers bibliographic materials for self-preparation and, as soon as the health situation allows it, the events aimed at training and the exchange of experiences were resumed.

He specified that not only the use of biological and alternative products for plant health and nutrition is promoted, but also the proper management of soils and the use of techniques such as intercropping.

The actions carried out by the organization stimulate compliance with the 63 measures implemented in the country to boost agriculture, with the participation of young people to guarantee continuity; in addition to being in line with sustainable development strategies at a global level, he considered.

Daisy Gloves López, Secretary of Communication and Information of the Provincial Branch of ACTAF, emphasized that this organization maintains as its purpose the development of agro-ecological agriculture based on sustainability, for which they have the necessary human capital.

He added that ties are being strengthened with other organizations and there is the support of international collaboration and local development projects that favor the production and marketing of food, forestry development and environmental education.

This assembly process is faced with greater ideological strength, resulting from a period of pandemic that confirmed unity as a fundamental principle to face the multidimensional crisis, accentuated by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the tightening of the US blockade against Cuba, they stated.

In this scenario, ACTAF affiliates in the province provided food aid to isolation centers, hospitals, maternity and nursing homes, day care centers and other social institutions linked to the fight against the pandemic, they highlighted.
