Diputados al Parlamento Europeo inician visita oficial a Cuba

With a tour of sites of historical, social and cultural interest in the Ciénaga de Zapata municipality, in the province of Matanzas, nine deputies to the European Parliament and other officials, belonging to the group La Izquierda, began their official visit to Cuba on Monday.

As the first item on the agenda, the MEPs and other members of the delegation toured the headquarters of the Korimakao Artistic Ensemble, and appreciated the cultural and community potential of this project.

«In the Korimakao, performing arts, music, plastic arts, literature and audiovisual media are merged, with a conception of integrality and transdisciplinary dialogue; betting on the value of artistic creation in improving the comprehensive quality of life of human beings”, according to the website of the artistic group.

Later, in the swamp town of Soplillar, they learned from the voice of its inhabitants what life was like for the inhabitants of this place before the Triumph of the Revolution, in conditions of misery and oblivion by the rulers of the Neocolonial Republic. Likewise, they expressed their gratitude for the revolutionary work that radically changed the history of its inhabitants, guaranteeing services and social works for the benefit of citizens in terms of health, education, among other achievements.

They especially commented on Fidel's dinner in this place on Christmas Eve with the charcoal burners, on December 24, 1959, a fact that ratified the very essence of the Revolution "of the humble, by the humble and for the humble."

The exchange with Nemesia Rodríguez Montano, the "Carbon Flower", living testimony of the barbarity of the mercenary invasion, backed by the United States Government against the Cuban people in April 1961, was emotional. Local historians narrated the dramatic events experienced for Nemesia and her family, on behalf of the victims of this imperialist aggression.

In the afternoon, the MEPs will develop other activities in this municipality of Matanzas and in the province of Mayabeque.

The delegation is made up of members of the European Parliament Martin Schirdewan, co-president of the Group La Izquierda; Manu Pineda, Sandra Pereira, Konstatinos Arvanitis, Giorgos Georgiou, Sira Rego, Elena Kountoura, Leila Chaibi and Maria Eugénia Rodriguez Palop, as well as other officials.
