    The Festival of the Great Wetland of the North of Ciego de Ávila is back

    After two years of interruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Festival of the Great Wetland of the North of Ciego de Ávila (GHNCA) restarted its space with various cultural activities and the recognition of institutions, entities and personalities that contribute to the development of that reservoir of flora and fauna.

    In its fifteenth edition, the event included presentations by educational interest groups on topics related to the conservation of the GHNCA, with the participation of pioneers from educational centers in the four municipalities (Chambas, Morón, Bolivia and Primero de Enero) that contemplate areas of that gigantic ecosystem.

    Various artistic manifestations enlivened the festivity, all carrying messages about the importance of protecting the environment, a guarantee for the survival of the different species of plants and animals.

    Exhibitions of the technical means used by the Fire Department and Forest Rangers to extinguish forest fires, presentations by the Morón Canine Club and a small circus show were added.

    Sponsored by the Flora and Fauna Company of Ciego de Ávila, the event also welcomes the institutions, entities and personalities that with their work contribute to the development of the GHNCA, some of which were recognized for having an impact on the development of that place, Yuney Ahmed Cruz Antigua, organizer of the event, highlighted.

    The Festival was also dedicated to the conservation of the Cuban crane, an endangered bird sighted in two areas of the GHNCA, in numbers that indicate the second largest population of this sub-endemic species in Cuba, after the one registered in Isla de la Juventud, Cruz Antigua stressed.

    Odey Martínez Llanes, a specialist from the Flora and Fauna Company of Ciego de Ávila, argued that they carry out adequate management to ensure the permanence of these birds, including controlled burning: “the next day, they go to that site in search of dead animals that are basic in their diet."

    She explained that it is known as Sandhill crane and migrated thousands of years ago to Cuban territory, where it has been identified in sterile savannahs (spaces suitable for feeding) in the provinces of Pinar del Río, Matanzas, Ciego de Ávila and Camagüey, in addition to the municipality Isla de la Juventud.

    The Festival's background is the environmental education actions in the protected areas contemplated by the GHNCA, particularly in El Venero wildlife refuge, a precursor to that celebration that was extended to the rest of the communities located in the wetland.

    Four years ago, the festivity moved to the area of ​​Laguna de La Leche, cataloged as a fundamental focus of urbanization within the GHNCA, where numerous economic and social works are promoted, with the support of the surrounding communities and proper management of the natural resources.
