The development of skills to implement climate change adaptation systems is included among the purposes of the Community Capacity Building Center (CCCC) of the coastal settlement of Punta Alegre, north of the municipality of Chambas.

Ileney Igalza Galañena, coordinator of the international project Coastal Resilience by the Center for Coastal Ecosystem Research (CIEC), stressed that it is also committed to prepare the inhabitants of the place to face natural disasters, so that risks and vulnerabilities are minimized.

Although the institution was officially inaugurated this month, since October 2021 it has trained more than 50 people, mostly students of Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary education, on issues related to the conservation of the coastal ecosystem, the reduction of risks of disasters and resilience in that environment, she specified.

The mission contemplates the training of managers and workers from key sectors of the local economy, community authorities and representatives of political and mass organizations, Ihosvany Martínez Tamayo, main specialist of Los Buchillones Archaeological Area, where the aforementioned CCCC is located, said.

He explained that five circles of interest are working on environmental activities on the coastal coastline, including "I am Resilient", with some 20 pioneers from the Máximo Gómez Báez Basic Secondary School and constituted from the interest of Coastal Resilience to promote responsible behavior with nature in the new generations.

The classes are taught by CIEC specialists, teachers from community educational centers and coordinators of the international project that financed the establishment of the center, with capacity for ten students and equipped with the necessary resources, including modern technology for the teaching-learning process, he held.

In addition to the lessons, involvement in sanitation days on the coast is achieved, as part of the initiative called "Cleaning the World", which aims to reduce polluting waste and preserve biodiversity in that ecosystem, he argued.

Ariel Mayea Escobar, director of the Joaquín de Agüero y Agüero Urban Pre-University Institute, alleged that they incorporate environmental education into the curricula, as support for Coastal Resilience and the Cuban State Plan for Confronting Climate Change, in addition to responding to needs of the community.

Systematic, partial and final evaluations of subjects in the exact, social and humanistic sciences also consider measuring knowledge about efficient management and conservation of the environment, and resilience to climate variations, he declared.

Through the Scientific Society (composed of students), teachers and officials of political, social and mass organizations, it is possible to extend the knowledge acquired in the center to the rest of the community, from which changes in behavior are appreciated of the population and the environment, he assured.

He valued the relevance of strengthening, from childhood, the capacities for the protection of the environment, the confrontation with climate change and the reduction of disaster risks, as well as the validity of transmitting messages of public good through children, who manage to sensitize adults.

Yamilé Jiménez Peña, one of the coordinators of Coastal Resilience in the territory, highlighted that knowledge is transferred to different actors in the economy to favor the proper management of the coastline and achieve an integrated vision of disaster risk reduction and adaptation to climate change.

He emphasized the implementation of good practices in areas of the Chambas Forestry Base Business Unit and cattle farms adjoining the coast, whose workers apply scientific knowledge in the rehabilitation of mangroves damaged by Hurricane Irma.

He added that the center promotes the synergy between Coastal Resilience and the international project Connecting Landscapes, also with an intervention site in Chambas (Farm School with Landscape Approach Rincón Los Hondones), to extend agroecological practices and the use of efficient microorganisms from the mountains to the coastal zone.
