The second edition of the Pío Leyva In Memoriam Festival, with festivities inscribed within the framework of the Culture Week of the municipality of Morón, will take place in the province of Ciego de Ávila with the aim of rescuing the son tradition in this territory.

The city of the Rooster, being the birthplace of the musician to whom the event owes its name, will offer from May 5 to 8, the spaces of the Trova House and La Casona cultural center as the main venues for the presentations, the Cuban News Agency reported.

Andrés Hernández Font, musical director and organizer of the event, declared that it would also be dedicated to honor the artistic imprint of the recently deceased the Son`s Gentleman, Adalberto Álvarez.

The festival can be held in person for the first time, for which it is necessary to design a program that takes advantage of physical spaces, in order to bring the genre to a more diverse audience, Hernández Font commented.

Amanda Tamayo Rodríguez, promoter of the festival, said that to meet this goal they developed a program of activities that balances theoretical spaces, book presentations and musical moments.

He also added that the agenda will not only be limited to the territory of Morón, it will also reach the provincial capital, Ciego de Ávila, where they will give master classes at the Ñola Saig art school.

José Ángel Guevara Tamarit, artistic director of the event, revealed that the opening gala would focus on the adaptation of musical works by Pío Leyva and the presentation of an audiovisual about his artistic work.

Sponsored by the Municipal Directorate of Culture, the Musicávila company, Cuba Ron and the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, the festival seeks, according to Andrés Hernández Font, to promote the son tradition in the province of Ciego de Ávila by rescuing the work of its main exponents.
