Family farming is promoted in Morón

With 3,092 yards and 242 active plots, Morón advances in small-scale food production, as part of the municipal self-sufficiency strategy, which places the initiative of families at the center.

To unlock access to the seed, one of the obstacles of this modality, organic farm called El Centro, in the Rooster City, offers seeds at affordable prices. Those in greatest demand are cucumber, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, beetroot, radish, parsley, celery and eggplant.

According to Daimy Rodríguez Rojas, a worker at the organic farm and representative of the popular councils of the municipality, the objective of the sale of seeds is for families to have the opportunity to plant their own products, an action that helps lower prices and brings food closer to the communities.

Likewise, she highlighted the increase in sales during the most complex period of the COVID-19 pandemic, because "the quarantine brought out the agricultural side of many."

Rodríguez Rojas said that the day for the marketing of seeds is Thursday, and explained that what is harvested not only benefits the family that sows it, but also goes to social centers such as schools, nursing and maternity homes, among others.

In 2020, when Invasor approached the local figures, from the provincial department of Urban, Suburban and Family Agriculture, it was learned that Ciego de Ávila accounted for 30,699 yards and plots. That number, as it was said then, seemed enormous and enough to supply thousands of people, but the truth is that these are small extensions of land: a backyard can reach up to 800 square meters and plots more than 800.

A note from the Cuban News Agency in April of last year reported an increase in this modality, counting more than 36,000, supported by the popular councils, the Association of Combatants and the mass organizations, with the purpose of obtaining condiments and vegetables.

In the most recent national tour of the Urban and Family Agriculture Program, the province showed better indicators, although only the work in the organic farm was checked.
