Las Aguas Mil Artistic and Literary Contest

Ziluen Poveda Espinosa, in décima and Yans González García, in poetry, were the winners of the IV Las Aguas Mil Artistic and Literary Contest, convened by the Book Center and the Clotilde Agüero Racial Commission of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba in Ciego de Ávila.

This transpired at the Estaciones Literary Cafe of the Juan Antonio Márquez bookstore, where a discussion was held on the legacy of the historian and cultural promoter Juan Manuel García (El Chino) of the municipality of Venezuela.

During the last day of Las Aguas Mil, audiovisual creations by girls and boys from the Ananá community project, belonging to the José Sirio Inda Hernández House of Culture, were also presented.

Las Aguas Mil celebrates the African imprint on Cuban culture, and this year it honored the memory of Ciego de Ávila`s researcher José Manuel García Delgado, who focused his work on rescuing and studying the legacy of Afro-descendants in the territory.

This edition included the literary panel Africa in Ciego de Ávila, the presentation of the book Akokán, by author Leonel Daimel García, and the screening of the documentary Una Misma Raza (A Same Race), by filmmaker Jorge Neyra.

According to statements by Nairobi Terry, president of the racial commission, to the Cuban News Agency, this year they decided to open the contest to all types of public, but dedicating more space to children, as these are natural generators of change; "If we want a society free of racism, we must educate from an early age."

On November 11, 2011, the Clotilde Agüero Racial Commission was founded in the province, at the initiative of UNEAC, as a subsidiary of the Aponte National Commission, which aims to eradicate the cultural prejudices that exist in the country about racism.
