The province of Ciego de Ávila obtained the venue for the national event for World Environment Day, reported today Odalys Goicochea Cardoso, general director of the Environment of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), at a press conference held in the capital of the country.

Alejandro González Díaz, specialist in environmental policies of the Territorial Delegation of CITMA in Ciego de Ávila, specified that the granting is guaranteed by the integrality in the protection and rational use of the surrounding resources, appreciable in the conservation of ecosystems and the natural heritage in benefit of society.

He highlighted the increase in environmental quality as a result of the fight against pollution, the improvement of hygiene in communities, and the reconversion of infrastructures and technologies in the industrial sector to develop production systems that are friendly to the environment.

The actions carried out from 2017 to date were considered as part of the implementation of the State Plan to Confront Climate Change (Life Task), in particular the ability to advance in the last biennium, despite the limitations imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the tightening of the US blockade against Cuba.

In Ciego de Ávila, he pointed out, sustainable production and consumption practices are also introduced, and studies are carried out on hazards, vulnerabilities and risks associated with floods due to heavy rains and phytosanitary disasters, the results of which contribute to increasing the response capacity to these problems.

The fulfillment of this last objective also contributes to the digital platform called Spatial Data Infrastructure of the Life Task (IDEVIDA) that socializes research reports with the purpose of favoring decision-making in local governments for adaptation to climate change.

The results of the work in the six protected areas of the province and in the protection of threatened or endangered species such as the Cuban crane and the jutía conguina, the latter native to the Ana María cays, in the south of the territory, are also recognized.
