Persisten las lluvias intensas e inundaciones en occidente y centro

Areas of heavy and intense rains and electrical storms have been affecting the western and central regions of Cuba with accumulations greater than 200 millimeters, which will continue for the rest of today and tomorrow, Saturday.

These rains are associated with the presence of a large area of low pressure that has been moving slowly in the southeast of the Gulf of Mexico, which has produced floods in towns from Pinar del Río to Sancti Spíritus and in Isla de youth.

In the next 12 to 24 hours, the low-pressure system should continue to move slowly to the northeast, increasing its translation speed, as it moves over the southeast of the Gulf of Mexico, to approach the Florida peninsula. With this behavior, the areas of strong and intense rains will continue to influence the western and central regions of Cuba.

There will be surges on both western coasts, as well as in the south of the central region, with slight coastal flooding in the south of Pinar del Río, Artemisa, Mayabeque, Isla de la Juventud and the Canarreos archipelago. The combined effect of the rain and the sea, on the south coast of the provinces of Artemisa and Mayabeque, can increase the intensity of the floods until they become moderate.

In the areas of heavy showers, rains and thunderstorms, both the strength of the wind and the height of the wave will increase. Considering the degree of saturation of the soil, attention must continue to the hydro-meteorological situation in each territory.

The Forecast Center keeps a close eye on this weather situation.
