The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) verifies, in the province of Ciego de Ávila, the results of the international project Disaster risk reduction and adaptation to the effects of climate change in the face of the dangers of floods and droughts in the center- northern Cuba affected by Hurricane Irma (Euroclima Plus).

For two days (June 30 to July 1), representatives of the international organization will exchange with representatives of the Government and other institutions involved in the project, including the Provincial Delegation of Hydraulic Resources, the Hydraulic Exploitation Company and the Meteorological Center, according to the visit agenda.

Likewise, they will talk with officials of the Civil Defense Organ and the Territorial Delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA).

Visitors will corroborate the installation of hydrological stations, the status of investment processes and the progress in the execution of construction works such as the Situation Room and the management centers for disaster risk reduction (CGRRD) and early warning points (PAT) in the municipalities of Morón and Bolivia.

Previously, they fulfilled a similar work agenda in the province of Camagüey, where infrastructures are also created for hydro-meteorological monitoring and the strengthening of capacities for adaptation to climate change and disaster risk reduction in the face of probable extreme natural events.

Euroclima Plus plans to reduce the impact of climate change and its effects in Latin America, promoting mitigation and adaptation, resilience and investment, explained Samantha Rodríguez, specialist of the Environment Unit (UMA) of CITMA in Ciego de Ávila.

In Cuba, it is conducted by the UNDP offices and receives financing of 1.5 million euros, from the Euroclima Plus Program (European Union) and the French Development Agency, he argued.

The UMA of Ciego de Ávila is involved in this project with actions aimed at strengthening the preparation of the community and key local actors in vulnerable areas, with the support of the Capacity Building Centers, the subsidiary of the Center for Disaster Reduction and Adaptation Climate Change, and universities.

In addition, it supports the updating of the studies of danger, vulnerability and risks of drought and floods due to intense rains, whose execution is prioritized in the most vulnerable municipalities (Chambas, Morón and Bolivia).

It is estimated that in the province of Ciego de Ávila, the actions of the Euroclima international project will benefit more than 718,700 people, including more than 352,200 women.

In this territory in the center of the country, there are more than 346,200 inhabitants at risk of drought and around 24,200 at risk of flooding, of which 49 percent are women.
