Exactly within a month, on September 25, Cuba will experience a historic day. To affirm it is not grandiloquence or mere enthusiasm. The new Family Code, which that Sunday will be submitted for popular approval by referendum, is a fundamentally revolutionary document; and its application could have a profound impact on the nation that we are, and on the destinies of many, many people.

Even before the people offer their support to finally make it law, this text –in its process of creation, successive discussions, consultations and transformations– has already contributed to constant human improvement, a pillar of our country's project.

It is a virtue of the document to portray realities that surround us and of which we are even a part, but that sometimes we prefer to avoid, under the false precept that "what is not mentioned does not exist".

The Code names, recognizes, offers paths for protection, and ensures that all people have all rights.

Thanks to this, in these months stereotypes have been questioned, topics that until recently were taboo have reached the popular debate, shocking, inspiring, sad life stories have been known..., a lot of activism has been done in favor of what is fair; and, unfortunately, lags have also appeared that hurt us as a society, and the eternal attitude of those who promote the "no" from false arguments, because their true interest is to denigrate everything that comes from the Cuban State.

However, even those contradictions grow. Perhaps the greatest evolution required of us by the new Code lies in understanding that a text of this scope, which deals with a universe as complex as families, is never going to fully satisfy us, because we are our experiences, our training and our prejudices.

Nevertheless, stubbornly and refusing something that we do not understand today could close the opportunity to be happy to others for a long time, and in the future, perhaps to ourselves, or to the daughters and sons we raise.

Perhaps there is no other law, except the Constitution of the Republic, as vital as this one for the country; here it is about affections, about what is most human among what is human: love. September 25, 2022 will be, yes, a historic day, and consequently, being carried away by comments or assumptions cannot be an option. Be informed, read, go to the primary source, are unavoidable steps.

So many destinies are at stake, so much good can be said about the Island by the consensus around the Family Code, that it is worth not stopping reviewing ourselves, comparing ideas, studying its articles. It is a yes for the ideals of beauty and justice on which the nation stands. It is a yes “with everyone and for the good of all”.
