The willingness of facilities in the tourism sector to join the global efforts aimed at protecting the Ozone Layer was recognized by the Territorial Delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) in Ciego de Ávila.

The commitment of entities attached to the Palmares Non-hotel Branch and the Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo Hotel to replace the use of substances that are harmful to this natural defense of the Earth is endorsed by the Ozone Technical Office (OTOZ), Alejandro González Díaz, a specialist at the CITMA, highlighted.

La Silla, La Redonda Restaurant, Playa Flamenco Bar and the Cayo Guillermo Dolphinarium were included in the list of honorees, where they managed to eliminate the use of chlorinated, brominated or fluorinated chemical products in air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, he explained.

Jorge Luis Hernández Bencomo, general director of the Palmares Non-Hotel Branch in Ciego de Ávila, ratified the commitment to replace these gases in the 36 units (restaurants, Ditú, facilities on the road, cafeterias, night and recreation centers) distributed in eight of the 10 municipalities of the province.

He stated that for more than two years they have been working on the eradication of depleting substances from the Ozone Layer (SAO), with positive results by replacing their use in the seven establishments that have air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, and boats.

At the Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo Hotel, since its design, the acquisition of modern and environmentally friendly technology was considered, the only one of its kind in the Jardines del Rey destination and with possibilities to develop sustainable tourism, Yalily Pina Álvarez, head of the Quality and Customer Service department, stressed.

She added that in such circumstances the use of ODS in air conditioners and equipment for freezing is avoided.

This hotel also stands out for its environmental education work with workers and clients to promote the responsible use of the coastal ecosystem, specialists from the CITMA Environment Subdelegation in Ciego de Ávila specified.

During 2022, the advisory, monitoring and control work on ODS inventories in entities in the province continued, fundamentally in the Renewable Energy Company (Rensol), where progress is being made in the eradication of this type of gas.

Likewise, courses on good practices are encouraged for workers in the state and non-state sectors, with the purpose of stimulating knowledge on the subject, responsible use and the suppression of chemical compounds that are harmful to the so-called ozone sphere.

As part of the Day of Struggle for the Eradication of ODS, extended from September 12 to 16, talks have been held in the province on different economic objectives, children's creation contests, and educational actions in public institutions and recreational spaces. intended for children.

The work carried out from Ciego de Ávila ratifies Cuba's commitment to the Montreal Protocol, signed 35 years ago and from which the depletion of the Ozone Layer was ended, cataloged as one of the greatest threats faced by Humanity.

That agreement confirmed the effectiveness of multilateralism and global cooperation for the gradual elimination of these gases, through actions that compensate for the damage to the ozone sphere, in a way that ensures protection against ultraviolet radiation, a guarantee for the survival and development of different life forms on Earth.

In this context, this September 16, the World Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer will be celebrated.
