When the Informative Phase was decreed today, the highest authorities of the province of Ciego de Ávila activated the defense councils at all levels and specified the measures to preserve human lives and economic resources, in the face of probable damage from Hurricane Ian.

Liván Izquierdo Alonso, president of the Provincial Defense Council (CDP), indicated extreme vigilance in areas prone to flooding in the municipalities of Venezuela, Majagua, Ciego de Ávila and Florencia, and other vulnerable localities in the territory.

Taking into account the risk posed by the proximity of the hydrometeorological event, Tomás Alexis Martín Venegas, vice president of the CDP, directed the suspension of teaching activities, and reiterated the priority of safeguarding human and material resources, with the support of the population.

They asked the people to stay informed through official information channels and strictly comply with the measures directed by the Civil Defense System.

Oscar Benedico Rodríguez, director of the Provincial Meteorological Center, predicted rains that could be intense until next Wednesday.

During the Informative Phase, compliance with measures is directed to the population, organizations, objectives and institutions; the protection actions planned for that stage are specified, the review and cleaning of inlets, sewers, drains and roof pipes begins, and roofs and objects that can be propelled by the winds are secured.

The actions planned for this stage include the pruning of trees, garbage and debris collection, and the protection of construction materials to prevent losses and obstructions in streets and sewage systems.

Other priorities are the physical examination and the evaluation of the hygienic-sanitary and anti-epidemic conditions in the places destined for evacuation, as well as the preparation of the citizens who will be transferred to safe areas in the face of risks of floods and landslides.

The availability of food, medicine, fuel and other essential resources to maintain attention to the people is checked, in addition to specifying the state of the portable generators to maintain the energy supply to vital points.

On this day they also expedite the harvesting of crops and create food and water reserves for animals, in accordance with the guidelines of the National Civil Defense General Staff.
