International and Cuban professionals will come together, today and tomorrow, at the Sixteenth Ciego de Ávila Arthroscopy Symposium 2022, based at the Doctor Antonio Luaces Iraola Provincial General Teaching Hospital.
The Doctor of Science Osvaldo García Martínez, president of the Cuban Group of Arthroscopy, Joint and Sports Surgery, specified that members of the Swiss, Austrian and German Society of Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery, plus a hundred national delegates, are participating.
Representatives of specialties related to this activity will take part, including anesthesiologists, physiatrists, orthopedists, rheumatologist radiologists and sports doctors, motivated by developing new surgical techniques, he argued.
The event proposes updates on diagnostic imaging and the use of anesthesia, as well as the socialization of experiences in arthroscopy of the shoulder, knee, hip and ankle, he added.
It will be an opportunity to discuss clinical cases and evaluate patients, in addition to the practice of live surgeries, with the application of advanced treatments and techniques to four patients with shoulder and knee conditions, fundamentally, he explained.
Adianez González Marrero, a 40-year-old patient who suffered a rupture of the left meniscus as a result of a traffic accident, appreciated the opportunity to undergo surgery to recover the mobility of his knee, with the help of national and foreign specialists.
Ernesto Alejandro Rodríguez Cruz, member of the Youth Baseball Team in the territory of Ciego de Ávila, expressed his expectations with the surgery to correct a shoulder injury that hinders his development as an athlete.
According to the program, the Arthroscopy Symposium in Ciego de Ávila was born from the spirit of solidarity of professors from various parts of the world and has been held uninterruptedly during the last decade, with the efforts of European and North American professors who value Cuban medicine.
The perseverance of the professionals involved in holding these meetings, fostering friendship and developing new arthroscopic techniques for joint surgery and sports in the country is recognized.
The Cuban Group of Arthroscopy, Joint and Sports Surgery valued the help of the international project Making Bridges, which integrates the efforts of European and North American doctors interested in promoting this type of medical intervention in Cuba.
This way ensures the training of professionals, inside and outside the country; they transfer theoretical and practical knowledge, and facilitate the entry of essential technologies (equipment and instruments).
Experts highlighted the economic value of these interventions at the international level, so that the cost of arthroscopic shoulder surgery can vary between five and 10 thousand dollars or euros, depending on the severity of the injury.
Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgery, used for the diagnosis and treatment of joints, through the introduction of an arthroscope, connected to a high-performance camera, which allows the joint to be observed in its entirety through a high-definition monitor.
It offers good results and reduces the recovery time of patients, which explains the extension of its use at an international level for the treatment of conditions in the knees, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips and ankles.
