Despite the fuel shortage, rail transport in Ciego de Ávila continues to show its face in the transfer of passengers, in an extremely complex context and in which inter-municipal and urban bus transport is almost non-existent.

Transporte ferroviario en Ciego de Ávila: con cambios y sin interrupciones

Idel Fernández Morfa, head of operations of the Railway Workshops Base Business Unit in Morón, told Invasor that the state of the routes has remained stable and that the suspensions are due to the lack of financing for the payment of fuel, sometimes, and others due to weather problems.

The manager explained that the Limones Palmeros-Ciego de Ávila itinerary covers the Limones Palmeros-Ciego de Ávila route, then goes through Ciego de Ávila-Majagua, makes an intermediate return at 1:00 in the afternoon, returns and returns at 4:00: 00 pm for Limones Palmero.

This route also serves those who live in Orlando González, Guayacanes and Caguazal, and work or study in the provincial capital.

In the case of Baraguá, Fernández Mora specified, two round trips are guaranteed: one leaves at 6:15 am for Ciego de Ávila, returns at 11:30 am, to return at 4:10 pm and return at 5:40 pm, for what that machine “sleeps” in Baraguá.

Of the changes that have been made with respect to the routes, it was decided to change the Ciego de Ávila-Júcaro route. Now the train leaves from Júcaro and returns at 11:00 in the morning. It leaves again at 4:30 pm, and the 5:30 am departure is eliminated.

Several of these routes were re-established after the stoppages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Regarding the deficiencies of passenger transport in the province, last May this newspaper reported on the "low coefficient of technical operability in state public transportation by bus, since a significant number of buses deteriorate at the bases due to the lack of tires, batteries, parts and pieces”, hence the even greater importance of the railway.

The recently concluded International Transport Fair could have left good news for the Union of Cuban Railways, when letters of intent were signed between the Cuban side and the Chinese company Beijing Fanglian Technology Co. Ltd, for the recovery of the railway infrastructure, according to reports of press.
