Students and teachers from the José de la Luz y Caballero and Alfredo Miguel Aguayo elementary schools, in the city of Ciego de Ávila, participated in a meeting convened by the Association of Combatants of the Cuban Revolution (ACRC), on the Day of the Combatants of the Fight against Bandits (LCB), commemorated this October 18.

Lucha Contra Bandidos, el legado en Ciego de Ávila

The common thread of the event was led by the retired Major of the Ministry of the Interior, Jesús RojasMuguercia, who is also the Head of the Secretariat of Patriotic, Military and Internationalist Work of the Ciego de Ávila branch of the ACRC. He said that they were gathered there to learn about the experiences of those who gave their lives for the Homeland and achieved the triumph of that epic.

Rafael Blas Nieves Hernández, retired Major of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, broke the ice by telling how he joined the LCB and answering the question of one of the pioneers present there. "What is Cuba for you?" asked the boy, to which he replied: "Cuba is Revolution, it is that we all contribute a grain of sand for a better Homeland, that means for me."

The other protagonists of that combative action, all between 80 and 90 years old, continued one by one recounting their most bitter moments in those years. They emphasized how difficult, but satisfying, it was to voluntarily join this battle. "We are sure that you will be the continuation of this legacy," René Gonzalo Montoto López told the children.

Fourth and sixth grade pioneers presented a recognition for the years of struggle and received diplomas dedicated to their schools, for their participation in the activity.

Some of the students read the bibliographies of Camilo Cienfuegos and Ernesto Che Guevara, on the occasion of the day in honor of them, which takes place every year from October 8 to 28. In addition, they were guided on a tour of the Association's headquarters, to visit the Fidel Castro Ruz and Juan Almeida Bosque rooms.

Rolando Hernández Alfonso, a teacher at the José de la Luz y Caballero school, visibly moved, recited a poem in honor of the combatants and concluded by saying "... the people win battles with their army of the dead."
