It would be February 2002 when the writer Larry Morales, from Morón, assumed the captaincy of a new ship, for which no one gave him coordinates. It was his personal compass and that of Lina Leyva, a writer as well, and of those who joined later, knowing that culture is the most faithful ambassador of friendship.

The Nicolás Guillén Foundation does not have headquarters in all the Cuban provinces and it is for a reason: it is not expected a monthly report or meetings or stamps, but to create culture, with a community sense and faithful to the memory of the National Poet.

Each branch is like a house, with a diverse family, with different members, different goals and projects. In addition, it is not little that the headquarters, in the house of writers who share profession and life, close to the Agramonte from Morón Park, has done in 20 years. With regard to such a marked anniversary, we summarize the main contributions to the local culture, from the memory of Larry.

    1- A hospital hammock

It was October 20, 2004 and the first crew member was none other than Dr. María Dolores Ortiz. Since then, I'm putting the hammock invites Ciego de Ávila citizens, Cuban and foreign personalities to talk with the public. A gathering attached to Cuban roots from the hammock itself, so significant for the aboriginal cultures of the Island, and for the rebel tradition.

The project takes its name from a poem by Lina, written when she was still a child, and which uses the act of sitting down to talk and rocking in the wind as a talisman against oblivion. Miguel Barnet and Vicente Feliú, to IbrahÍm Doblado, Ciro Bianchi, Nelson Domínguez and Mariela Castro Espín.

2- Lights and camera for the story

It all started with the Screen Outside project. Led by television producer Néstor Labrada, since 2002 the Foundation has been dedicated to collecting and preserving images and audiovisual heritage, from the most remote times.

However, never to leave them at the mercy of dust and oblivion, but for action. First, with the production of serial programs for local television, under the names of Icons and Half a millennium by Morón.

This was followed by fiction shorts based on stories by Lina Leyva, and some documentaries on topics from the most local to the universal culture, also under the leadership of José Ángel Guevara Tamarit.

    3- To the horizon

Probably the most loved, reviewed and impactful project in 20 years has been Las Barcas de Cristal.

The creators, Lina Leyva and Yamila Ferrá, confess that, at the beginning, the word project was never used. They were two friends trying to unite teaching and poetry to help groups of adolescents in their daily struggles, and that is how it has been until today.

Not only has it been left to the boys to listen to them, but it was erected as a space for them to dare to shape fears, conflicts and dreams with an artistic perspective. Yes, the merit is double. Las Barcas are almost 15 years old and have all the features of a project that is becoming an adult.

4- That the guitar does not lack a choir

It has been 10 years since it became evident: music, trova, accompanied each space, gathering or planned or improvised meeting on the terraces. Years later, the small troubadour rebellion occurred: for the first time in 2012 they met only for the pleasure of singing and listening to each other.

Cuerda Rota they called a project that also welcomed amateur poetry and art. Asiel Babastro, Yoan Zamora and Lázaro Rojas led it successively and the voice or guitar of Lien Piloto, Nelson Mirabal and other enthusiasts have never been lacking.

It was born with the encouragement and approval of Pepe Ordaz and Vicente Feliú, and lives with the vital impulse of a city with very few trova spaces.

    5- Light for adolescence

It was always known that art and culture have a lot to do with spirituality and the health of the body. For eight years, social gatherings and understanding from a safe space were the keys with which the psychologist Vladimir Morales "unlocked" myths, taboos and concerns of groups of boys and girls.

Health promotion went hand in hand with Lina's stories and the environment combined to educate. Only Vladimir's death could stop his enthusiasm and good faith.

In the words of Larry himself, since 2018 the project has been in mourning, wanting to continue, but in respectful silence, also in gratitude towards its leader.

    6- The drums beat

The first project that Nicolás Guillén would be proud of is the last one that was born to the Foundation.

Yambambó has short and long-term objectives, documentation and goals since 2016, when the request of its protagonists became a reality. The members of the Famn Zetwual folklore group, all women, studied, worked and created for the Foundation a comprehensive project of Haitian traditions settled in the community of Tuero, in Morón.

In addition, today Yambambó has all the merits: respect for Afro-Cuban culture, its promotion from the community, the art that has been brought to the largest stages in the country... Already the "star women" have a record, video clip, audiobook, and documentary, undergraduate thesis inspired by them and eager to create.

Something unites all the great projects, the background ones (such as the promotion of Guillén's work) and those that no longer continue —Lina and the clown Pepín, and Jazz en Familia, which today continues from the UNEAC—, and it is the face of astonishment and the good time they spend at their headquarters in Morón every visit.

From children from nearby schools to guests from foreign universities, there is a magic, they say, that they cannot explain. It is the creation, the culture and the sense of community. Guillén in good hands, 120 years after he was born.
