    • In the context of the centenary of the University Student Federation (FEU) and the celebration of the X Congress of that organization, Portal Avileño proposes the testimony of a young woman who volunteered in the Red Zone during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Unable to rid herself of her fears, Diana Gómez Guerra, a Civil Engineering student at the Máximo Gómez Báez University, in Ciego de Ávila (UNICA) enlisted to join the second group of student volunteers who provided help at that campus, which has become a center for isolation for suspected SARS-CoV-2 virus.

On March 30, 2021, she joined the Red Zone, with more courage than fear, as her parents taught her, who supported her and were strong in the face of the decision, although they seemed curtailed by uncertainty in the face of a more risky mission than the one as a messenger for vulnerable people.

Imposed by the measures that she had to comply with to avoid contagion, she honorably carried out sanitation tasks in the corridors, rooms and bathrooms of patients who were confined because they were direct contacts of positive cases, which increased the fear during the first days, but she managed to overcome it.

She learned that hygienic-sanitary protocols were a guarantee of salvation and she turned them into a habit: she did not neglect the use of essential clothing (pyjamas, gown covers, rubber boots, face masks and a face shield) to access the risk area, and when finishing the task it moved directly to the showers for disinfection.

The team she joined was divided into two subgroups, so they could take turns, but the days off were only released from the hustle and bustle in the Red Zone as other activities demanded their efforts, such as food production.

This is how the first month passed and, after completing the period of isolation, he gave breath back to his family and neighbors with her return to the neighborhood, which was only temporary because she felt the duty and commitment to return to accompany her companions.

After a month passed, she returned to that environment, where she managed to feel happy with her work team, despite the growing tensions with the increase in positive and suspected cases. Cuba, and the province of Ciego de Ávila in particular, was entering the so-called pandemic peak.

Among the isolates, the number of confirmed cases increased. They were able to feel sadness at the fading of hopes with the arrival of the PCR-RT results, and then they learned to heal the soul, cultivate faith and hope in the sick.

Each day was more intense than the one before. During the early mornings, they watched from their rooms the entrance of buses loaded with suspects. Not infrequently, they carried out cleaning and disinfection at night to create capacities for new arrivals and other patients who were waiting at home.

The effort increased as circumstances demanded it; it was a time to grow.

Another month of the calendar was left behind and Diana returned to her family, worried about the constant pain in her knees that has affected her since childhood. She was forced to rest at the end of July and beginning of August, but found no impediment to return to the Red Zone.

With limitations to carry out some activities, but she was there again, while her chest heaved when she learned that the relief team had fallen ill and the certainty that she had to be extremely careful, for the good of her and her teammates.

A dose of the first Cuban vaccine against COVID-19 was already running through his bloodstream and the remaining two were inoculated at the University, converted into a care center for positive patients since hospitals were at full capacity.

The distribution of food was the new task assigned to the so-called Gallitos Uniqueeños, so the risks increased when coming into contact with patients confirmed with the disease, but it was not the time to focus on that, only what was necessary to adopt safety biosecurity measures.

Dispensing nutrients at the appropriate times to meet the needs of diabetic, hypertensive and other underlying conditions ―in many cases older adults― was the main concern.

She was comforted by the faces of the patients' satisfaction with his care, some even referred to the wasted talent by not practicing medicine.

The times of distribution of food were always distinguished by the joy of the reunion and were opportunities to bring smiles with the occurrences of the young people. Repairing the spirit would help to heal and make the stay more pleasant.

She suffered when he saw the seriously ill patients and, knowing the danger he was running, on more than one occasion, he broke the distance to encourage or help them eat, so that they could strengthen their bodies to fight the virus.

The protocols suggested protecting oneself, but in those moments human sensitivity exceeded the indications; acting differently seemed selfish to him.

Important dates for the families passed while they were there and it was even difficult to find the time to make a call to congratulate or confirm that they were okay, but on the other side they understood that it was necessary to fight for life for future celebrations.

In an oversight, Diana and some of her colleagues also got sick, so they were on the other side and their attitude was compensated. Less complex days passed, with the effects of the vaccination campaign the pandemic peak fell in the province and the country.

Soon the University resumed its usual functions and they returned to the classrooms to share the stories of the so-called Unique Gallitos, with the certainty that they became better human beings and became heroes and heroines of a transcendental moment for Cuba and the world.
