The Prime Minister of Cuba, Manuel Marrero, assured this Tuesday that the current priorities are comprehensive care for the elderly, safe motherhood and the causes of population mobility.
From the Havana Convention Center, the head of government added among the main policies associated with the country's demographic situation assistance to infertile couples, teenage pregnancy, the guarantee of safe housing and the analysis of availability of labor force.
During his speech at the Tenth Ordinary Period of Sessions of the National Assembly of People's Power (Parliament), he defined that the core aspects at this point: fertility, mortality, internal and external migrations, are of vital importance in the development and strategies of the island.
In his opinion, the Caribbean nation has a dynamic similar to that of developed countries, with a permanent incidence of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States, and monitoring of demographic dynamics since the 1970s.
As part of the Economic and Social Policy Guidelines of the Party and the Revolution, various government institutions implement measures to care for the aging population and encourage fertility, in order to guarantee, as far as possible, generational succession.
Marrero indicated that this situation exhibits levels of decrease, since Cuba has not achieved, for 30 years, the replacement rate and alluded to the promotion of the participation of the elderly, the only sector with growth, in economic and social tasks.
Likewise, he mentioned the creation of seven subcommittees on the subject and the identification of actions for their implementation and follow-up, some of them planned for the year 2023, linked to comprehensive life care, the introduction of technologies and the development of new medicines.
He also stressed that these initiatives will focus on improving family care and access to housing, especially for mothers with three or more children and young people, since the phenomenon still does not reach the necessary transversality in the territories or adequate care.
