Stimulating innovative thinking in teachers that allows transforming educational practice, to continue contributing to educational improvement, is one of the immediate challenges that the Association of Pedagogues of Cuba (APC) is looking at, at the gates of a new year.

Asociación de Pedagogos con ojo crítico desde Ciego de Ávila

This was evidenced by the General Assembly of members of the APC, which this Wednesday brought together, in Ciego de Ávila, educators from Cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus, Camagüey and the host province, who put a critical eye on 2022 in an association that has in the activity its spine is scientific and seeks to exalt the figure of the teacher.

Questions such as what new actions to develop in order to meet the improvement needs of teachers, or how to continue promoting collaboration agreements on Popular Education, guided a debate that revealed dissatisfaction with a membership that, although it exceeds 42,000 associates nationwide, this year it grew discreetly, without reaching the expected 10 percent, in part, due to the insufficient incorporation of new members in pedagogical schools and universities, in the absence of sustained work on the pedagogical professional motivation of future educators.

However, the affiliation of new associates in various sectors such as Inder, Culture Institute, the Ministry of the Interior and the Universities of Medical Sciences was achieved.

Hence, as stated by Dr. C. Gilberto García Batista, national president of the APC, this has been a year of recovery, after COVID-19, in which attempts have been made to reactivate scientific activity, as it was the one that provokes the incorporation of educators, and, therefore, the growth of the membership.

The participants agreed to recognize that active participation has been achieved in the improvement of the National Education System, particularly in experimental schools, with more leading actions from research, making it possible to move towards the educational institutions that we want to have.

Popular Education begins to gain special space within the association's work, whose focus has been able to be carried out thanks to training processes through diploma courses, courses, workshops and other forms of postgraduate education. This has made it possible to strengthen ties with local governments, the Ministry of Education and other organizations to make available to them, as well as carry out diagnoses to communities, which have provided valuable experiences.

Facing 2023, García Batista explained that it is planned to strengthen the associative activity in the APC groups—which constitute the base—as the first managers of activities to be carried out according to the needs of the educators who participate there. They will also be able to organize their own events and stimuli, those that would be closest to them, the family and the community where they act directly.

Likewise, he said, the intention is to encourage scientific activity in the territories, based on their priorities, and seeking strategic alliances with universities, schools and different institutions, to achieve a strengthening of the membership. It is also intended, based on these alliances, to revive the incorporation to master's degrees, doctorates and diplomas that are based on territorial needs.

The meeting was propitious to recognize the educators Eduardo Batista Palacio Ortiz, from Villa Clara, Rosa María Campo Pérez, from Cienfuegos, and Wilfredo Osuna Rodríguez, from Avila, who has been director for 15 years, with the "Consecration to the Teaching" Award from the Águedo Morales Reina Special School, in the main city, as part of the more than three decades that he has dedicated to Special Education.
