The historian Ángel Cabrera Sánchez recovered for the memory of Ciego de Avila the itinerary of the Caravan of Freedom, in 1959.

“(…) the town of Ciego de Ávila was abuzz. Thousands of people, of all ages, flocked to the Central Highway, from the entrance of Camagüey to the exit towards Havana; and to nearby streets and lots to appreciate the various vehicles and military equipment of the Caravan, parked there —waiting for Fidel's orders—, hug the brave Barbudos, take pictures with them, bring them food, ask them for bullets as souvenirs and invite them to their houses.

“The itinerary followed by the maximum leader of the Revolution in the city of the Gómez Cardoso brothers included the Central Highway, Martí and Cuba streets, up to house number 108 (East), where he stayed for several hours. From that place, through Cuba to Narciso López street and from there to the Central Highway, towards Sancti Spíritus”.
