The passage of the Caravan of Freedom was evoked today by the people of Ciego de Avila, in the same place where the bearded men of the Rebel Army made a stop in January 1959 to celebrate, together with this people, the triumph of the Cuban Revolution.

As part of the journey that began on January 1 in the eastern region of the country, at kilometer 488 of the Central Highway, the caravan members coming from Camagüey delivered the multicolored flags to the “platoon” of young people from Ciego de Avila, who raised them firmly and proudly.

A representation of the Ciego de Ávila people, congregated at the intersection of Maceo and Chico Torres streets, together with the top leaders of the political, social and mass organizations, recalled the journey and reaffirmed the will to be faithful to the legacy of the historic generation of the revolution.

From different cultural manifestations, local artists also recalled the emblematic date and ratified the concept of Revolution and the cry of "Homeland or Death! Overcome!”

Liván Izquierdo Alonso and Tomás Alexis Martín Venegas, first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Party and Governor, respectively, and other leaders of the territory, gave young people from Ciego de Avila the cards that accredit them as militants of political organizations.

With the purpose of commemorating the 64th anniversary of the National Revolutionary Police on January 5, recognition was also granted to that body of the Ministry of the Interior, whose combatants have dedicated themselves to the preservation of internal order and citizen tranquility?

The day was opportune to demonstrate the commitment of the 10 municipalities with the second stage of the Day of Decisive Effort, which will last until the coming July 26, National Rebellion Day, as part of the Ciego de Ávila Heartbeat political movement, promoter of transformations economic and social.

Nailyn Machado Álvarez, first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Union of Young Communists, ratified the commitment of young people to the defense of the Revolution, by assuming a consistent attitude towards study, work and other tasks of the Homeland.

In its edition of the day, the Invasor Newspaper, official organ of the Provincial Committee of the Party, reviewed the transit of the Caravan of Freedom through the city of Ciego de Ávila, based on the statements of the historian Ángel Cabrera Sánchez:

“(…) the town of Ciego de Ávila was abuzz. Thousands of people, of all ages, flocked to the Central Highway, from the entrance of Camagüey to the exit towards Havana; and to nearby streets and lots to appreciate the various vehicles and military equipment of the Caravan, parked there —waiting for Fidel's orders—, hug the brave Barbudos, take pictures with them, bring them food, ask them for bullets as souvenirs and invite them to their houses.

“The itinerary followed by the maximum leader of the Revolution in the city of the Gómez Cardoso brothers included the Central Highway, Martí and Cuba streets, up to house number 108 (East), where he stayed for several hours. From that place, through Cuba to Narciso López street and from there to the Central Highway, towards Sancti Spíritus.”
