On February 3rd, 2023, a sporting event that will go down in history should take place in Ciego de Ávila: that day the National Field Hockey Championship will be launched, in the women's branch, which will mark the premiere of the synthetic field, a deserved gift to the family of this discipline in Ciego de Ávila, the most successful in the province in Cuban competitions.

En febrero se estrena la cancha sintética de hockey en Ciego de Ávila

Although the construction of this facility was a real headache, to the point of distrusting at times if it would come true, today it can be said that a new story begins for local hockey.

From now on, athletes will have to adapt to the new playing conditions and, although it is true that the new surface offers greater possibilities for technical play, it will not be a matter of hours or days to know how to make the most of a court that promotes movement and effectiveness in hitting the ball.

In the women's competition, which will have its Technical Congress on February 2, the current champion, Las Tunas, will once again have the Ciego de Ávila`s squad as its bitterest rival, which already in the 2019 tournament was filled with glory with a scepter, although Camagüey is also a strong opponent. The remaining contenders will be Santiago de Cuba and Villa Clara.

The hosts, with their technical director Rubén Benítez Rivalta, will be able to present players of the stature of Taimi Licea Pérez, Yurismaidy García Sánchez, María Elena López Casi and Geydi Mejías on the field, all with great possibilities of serving in the national team.

However, no one doubts that the Las Tunas will be the great favorites, because it is not for nothing that they have deserved the throne on 14 occasions and in recent years, it is the territory that contributes the most athletes to the Cuban squads. By the way, after this fight, a pre-selection will be called with a view to the Central American Games in San Salvador, next June.
