    Ciego de Ávila nominará candidatos a diputados al Parlamento

    This Sunday, another transcendental day for the Cuban electoral system will be that of in Ciego de Ávila, when, in extraordinary session, the Municipal Assemblies of People's Power will meet to nominate the candidates for deputies to Parliament, an important exercise in democracy from which the possible future representatives of the people in the highest body of legislative power in the country.

    As Mariset Hernández Rodríguez, president of the Provincial Candidacy Commission (CCP), explained to Invasor, this moment was preceded by the plenary sessions of the mass organizations, held at the end of last year at different levels, of which, in correspondence with the provisions of articles 171, 172 and 173 of the Electoral Law, emanated 933 proposals.

    In addition to reflecting all sectors of society, the proposals were endorsed by the personal merits of the candidates, the recognition of the work they do and the commitment to the social project that we defend.

    This accumulation of proposals, he specified, served as a quarry for the candidacy commissions in the different instances to select those who will integrate the pre-candidacies for deputies, which, in previous days, were submitted to consultation with the 547 delegates of the province, so that they These, individually and openly, will express their criteria and approval.

    Out of this process came the proposals for which today the delegates of the Municipal Assemblies of People's Power will vote by show of hands and individually to nominate the 23 candidates for deputies who, if elected by the people in the national elections, Scheduled for next March 26, they will represent the territory in the Cuban Parliament, which will be made up of 470 deputies (135 less than the current one, in accordance with the current Electoral Law), representing all sectors of Cuban society.

    As a general rule, and in accordance with the provisions of the electoral regulations, one deputy will be elected for every 30,000 inhabitants or fraction greater than 15,000 inhabitants; the municipalities will maintain a minimum of two deputies and those who are delegates of the Municipal Assemblies of People's Power must not exceed 50 percent. Hence, as Hernández Rodríguez details, in nine municipalities there will be two deputies, while, in the capital, there will be five.

    The president of the CCP pointed out that in the proposals pre-candidates of grassroots descent predominate, who are delegates of the Municipal Assemblies, then personalities from the provincial level, and ultimately those corresponding to prominent figures of the nation.

    After being nominated, he pointed out; the candidates for deputies will exchange with the people, from February 6 to March 24, in different spaces such as communities, labor and student groups. In addition, they will visit local development projects and small and medium-sized companies, all in order to become familiar with the voters and the characteristics of each municipality.

    From the Provincial Electoral Council, Marleny Baéz Valdivia, its vice president, reported that, to ensure the smooth running of next month's general elections, work is already underway on the preparation, review and updating of voter lists, as well as on the completion and training of the electoral authorities that will perform that day at the different levels.

    Once again the polls call, in an act to which we have become accustomed, but which, for this reason, demands no less citizen responsibility to consciously choose those who in the coming years will carry on their shoulders the responsibility of giving voice to the interests of the town.
