Ciego de Ávila advances in the fight against climate change

The planning of 34 actions and a budget of more than 336 million 845,000 pesos will allow the province of Ciego de Ávila to advance in compliance with the Cuban State Plan to confront climate change (Life Task) during the year 2023.

María del Carmen Olivera Isern, sub-delegate for the Environment in the Ciego de Ávila, stressed that the largest number of activities corresponds to the provincial representations of Hydraulic Resources and the Ministries of Tourism (Mintur), Agriculture and Science, Technology and Environment, as well like Almest Real Estate.

For the current stage, she pointed out, the dumping of sand is planned in the beach sector located north of Cayo Paredón Grande and the implementation of fertigation systems in hotels in the Jardines del Rey tourist destination.

She added that Mintur units should progress in the installation of more efficient, economical and less aggressive lighting and air conditioning equipment for the environment, in addition to placing photovoltaic solar panels for power generation.

In addition, she said, an electrification project for 5,000 homes through the assembly of 209 300-watt photovoltaic solar systems, 137 for homes that lack this service and 72 for replacements due to breakdowns.

Olivera Isern emphasized that Tarea Vida covers the 10 municipalities of Ciego de Ávila, where they have a program and work methods that allow monitoring of what is planned, through checks in the benefited areas and accountability of the organizations involved.

Among the results for the 2022 period, the relocation of 20 homes in the coastal settlement of Punta Alegre, in the municipality of Chambas, stands out, with which there are 167 homes delivered to families residing in vulnerable areas of the north and south coasts of the province, therefore, a closer approach to the goal of relocating 220 families by the year 2030 is achieved.

Likewise, she said, they applied measures for the conservation and improvement of soils with organic amendment in 114.4 hectares (ha) corresponding to the Agricultural Company of the municipality of Florencia, the Forestry-Based Business Unit, the Orlando González Agricultural Production Cooperative and the Morón Urban Farm.

She highlighted the use of seeds with genetic category for the development of corn, bean and potato productions in 2061 ha; and the installation of 165 two-kilowatt isolated photovoltaic systems in the north of the province, as a result of the international project Energy Resilience in the face of meteorological events in the north of Cuba.

In the municipalities of Chambas, Morón, Bolivia, Ciro Redondo, Majagua, Ciego de Ávila, Florencia, Venezuela and Baraguá, 241 ha were planted with species such as casuarina and red mangrove; and in the last three, assisted natural regeneration actions allowed the planting of 122 ha of oak.

Besides, 16 ecological passes were reestablished in the Chicola dam and eight gates were acquired to guarantee the sustainability and rational management of water resources in the Great Northern Wetland of Ciego de Ávila, where a territorial project achieved the characterization of the flora, fauna and biota aquatic, so that management and conservation actions in that area are facilitated.

In the year 2022, 36 of the 42 planned actions were executed, which represented an investment of 184,042 million pesos; the breaches were due to the lack of supplies (imported materials and fuel) in a difficult international economic situation, increased for Cuba as a consequence of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government.
